First Thursdays at Sly Grog

General Information:

The Speak Easy Story Slam is the 2019 re-invention of Asheville’s longest running story slam; Synergy Story Slam created by Fynn Crooks way back in 2010. Since then, the night has had a couple of homes, a slew of hosts, and heard from hundreds of tellers, first timers and regulars. However, the mission has remained the same – to have fun, meet your neighbors, and to build a stronger community through the sharing of personal stories!

Here's how it works:

Each month, we’ll announce a theme for the upcoming slam which you can find on the new Speak Easy Story Slam page. On the night of the slam, the mic is open to anyone that has a story to tell and which relates in some way to the night’s theme. The guest host will draw 10 random names out of a hat and it’s on!

Come prepared or wing it. We’re just looking for first person stories – not the political rant of the day, stand-up comedy or the beloved TED talk.

At the end of the night an audience selected winner will receive a prize and the buzz that comes from being on stage in front of an engaged crowd. They'll also get an invite to tell a story at the end of season grand slam. For the Audience:

Entrance to the show is a suggested donation of $5 however pay what you can, we want you there soaking up the stories.

You don't have to tell a story to enjoy the slam. Having what you hear from the stage connect in your own mind is where the real magic happens, so the more people who listen, the better!

Come early, grab a snack or a drink at Sly Grog, play some games and get a good seat. Doors open at 7, stories start around 7:30.

For Storytellers:

Shoot for beginnings, middles and endings. You can interpret the theme any way you like, but make a connection and think about what makes this story important to you. Stories should be true (mostly) and they should be personal stories that you can tell without any notes. Stories should be 5-8 minutes long. It’s not alot of time, so jump right into your tale. You’ll get a cue when 8 minutes is approaching but be mindful … we don’t want to have to cut the power on the mic! To share a story, show up at 7:00, fill out a piece of paper with your name and e-mail address, then throw it in the hat and wait. At 7:30, we’ll draw 10 names out of the hat and those lucky folks will tell stories. For those that don’t get to tell, try not to fret, the intention to tell is important and come back. Your story can most definitely be worked into a future nights’ theme.
