In the 1700s, dozens of colonial-era Baptist and "New Light" preachers were imprisoned in Virginia for preaching without an Anglican (Church of England) license. While there isn't one single consolidated roster, historians estimate that over 40 preachers were jailed in Virginia at the same time at the height of this religious persecution.

The most prominent names on this historical list include:
James Ireland: Imprisoned and nearly poisoned in the Culpeper jail for five months. He courageously continued to preach to massive crowds through his cell window.
John Weatherford: Incarcerated in Chesterfield County for five months. Like Ireland, he preached to crowds through the bars until his release was secured by Patrick Henry.
John Waller, Lewis Craig, & James Childs: The very first group of Baptist preachers arrested and jailed in Spotsylvania County in 1768.
Jeremiah Walker: Imprisoned for over six months in Chesterfield County.
Elijah Craig: A well-known preacher locked up in Caroline County (near Bowling Green).

Additional figures who suffered incarceration or harassment across Virginia include Thomas Ammon, John Pickett, William McClannahan, John Burrus, and James Greenwood.

The early records of these events, including the specific counties they were arrested in, are maintained by groups preserving denominational archives. You can read more about their personal stories and tribulations on the Baptist History Homepage or learn about their defiance on the Captive Faith platform. To connect with others researching these specific colonial figures, you can also join discussions on the Baptists Preserving History Facebook Group.
