E-Bikes, Tools & Larger Batteries
For tools and rides — charge outside when possible.
E-bikes, scooters, power tools, and other large lithium-ion battery devices store considerably more energy.
When possible, charge these devices outside and never allow charging equipment to block an exit. Battery fires can grow quickly if a battery fails. FPW26_Social Post Copy English
Safe charging also means keeping your means of egress clear.

On a flight? Keep it in sight.
When charging portable devices on an airplane, keep them where they can be seen and monitored. Do not charge devices in overhead compartments, and never charge e-cigarettes or vapes on an airplane.
If a battery overheats or fails, flight crews need to be able to respond quickly. FPW26_Social Post Copy English

Soft surface? Hard pass.
Charge phones, tablets, laptops, and other devices on a hard, flat surface such as a table, desk, or floor.
Beds, couches, blankets, and pillows can trap heat and block airflow, increasing the chance that a battery will overheat. FPW26_Social Post Copy English

The Alaska Central Chapter of ICC is proud to join NFPA in recognizing Fire Prevention Week 2026!
This year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”
Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day. Small choices about how we charge, use, and store those devices can make a big difference in preventing fires.
Follow us this week as we share simple battery-safety tips that can help keep Alaska homes, workplaces, and communities safer.

✔️ Trim branches away from roofs and clean gutters
✔️ Insulate exposed pipes and seal drafts before winter
✔️ Anchor heavy furniture, TVs, and water heaters to walls for earthquake safety
✔️ Test smoke and CO alarms monthly
✔️ Repair damaged stairs, railings, and exits
✔️ Sign up for emergency weather and evacuation alerts
✔️ Create a family emergency meeting and evacuation plan
✔️ Keep a 72-hour emergency kit ready with food, water, medications, and flashlights
