Exciting news for Wetumpka! The Smithsonian is coming to our community this holiday season.

The Alabama Humanities Alliance is bringing Americans, a Smithsonian traveling exhibition developed by the National Museum of the American Indian, to five Alabama communities as part of the nation’s America at 250 commemoration.

Americans explores the powerful and often complex ways Native Americans have shaped U.S. history, culture and identity. The exhibition also takes a closer look at familiar stories including Thanksgiving, Pocahontas, the Trail of Tears and the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

Wetumpka is proud to be one of just five Alabama stops on the statewide tour. The exhibit will be hosted by the Elmore County Museum from Nov. 16 through Dec. 18, 2026, with additional local programming highlighting the rich Native American history of our area.

We’re excited to welcome visitors from across the region to experience this nationally recognized exhibition and discover how the stories of Elmore County connect to the larger American story.

The City of Wetumpka will begin downtown parking improvement and Spring Street construction on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

Work will take place on the triangular block at the north end of Company Street, between Spring Street and Green Street. The existing gravel parking areas in this block will be closed and unavailable during construction.

The project will include new paved public parking areas, grading and paving work along Spring Street, continued sidewalk improvements, streetlights, and a new public restroom.

Additional downtown parking will remain available at the upper gravel lot near Company Street and Orline Street, as well as the lower paved lot off Orline Street and Spring Street next to Coosa River Craft House.

Intermittent street closures and access changes may occur throughout the project. The City will provide updates as closures or changes occur.
