County fairs don’t just build exhibitors. They build leaders.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve had the opportunity to hear from four incredible women and leaders in our industry. Each with a different story, but all rooted in the same place.

The county fair.

It’s where confidence is built.
Where work ethic is formed.
Where kids learn how to win, how to lose, and how to keep going.

It’s where friendships are made, families are built, and communities show up.

What you’ve seen here is just a glimpse.

Each of these women shared stories, lessons, and perspectives that go far beyond a single post—and they’re worth hearing in full.

To the women who shared their stories… thank you.

And to the families still in the barn, still putting in the work… keep showing up.

Because county fairs don’t just shape exhibitors…

they shape the future of this industry.

Pontotoc County Horse Exhibitors! Please be aware and remain cautious!

***UPDATE***

As of 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19, there are multiple confirmed cases of Equine Herpes Myleoencephalopathy, the neurologic form of EHV-1 and exposure risks in horses that attended the WPRA Finals in Waco, Texas between Nov. 5 and Nov. 9. We have confirmed two cases of EHM in horses that attended the Barrel Futurities of America World Championship at Lazy E Arena this week.

The BAF World Championship has been cancelled and horses who were at either event should be taken home, isolated, and quarantined for the next 14 days.

EHM spreads through horse contact, shared buckets and/or tack, contaminated trailers, airborne droplets from horses coughing or snorting and from people who handle exposed horses. Exposed horses that were at either of the events should be isolated at least 30 feet, but as far as possible, from other horses. Efforts to prevent air movement from exposed horses to unexposed horses should be made. Exposed horses are not allowed to move off the home premises until they have completed 14 days with no symptoms. Unexposed horses may travel to events, although it is recommended, they do not leave the premises unless truly necessary.

Owners should watch for:
Fever over 101.5
Nasal Discharge
Lethargy
Hind end weakness
Any neurological issues

If you notice any of the symptoms, please contact your veterinarian immediately. Cases that show neurological issues are considered a medical emergency.

ANIMAL HEALTH ALERT

The Oklahoma State Veterinarian has been made aware of a possible Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy exposure at the WPRA event in Waco, Texas Nov. 5 through Nov. 9.

We are working closely with Lazy E Arena, as some of the horses from the WPRA event could be in Guthrie this week for the Barrel Futurities of America World Championship.

If you are from Oklahoma and were at the WPRA event – it is recommended you go home and quarantine your horse. If EHM is confirmed, horses who were in the Waco event will be required to quarantine at home.

Owners should monitor the temperature of their horse for spikes of 101.5 or above and increase biosecurity measures.

For questions about quarantine or EHM exposure, call the Oklahoma State Veterinarian's office at 405.522.6141.

Updates will be provided as they become available.

On behalf of the Pontotoc County Fair Board, thank you to OSU Extension, all the parents, 4-H leaders, Ag teachers (and their spouses 😉) and volunteers who helped enter exhibits and bring them to the fair! If there was a vacancy, you helped fill it! We see you and appreciate you! We network with MANY people/businesses in our county. Did you know the Ada News sells ads and prints the fair book? Did you know B & S Sanitation brings out extra trash cans and makes a special trip in the night to dump them? Did you know the radio stations promote the fair? Did you know the Agri-plex workers take their vacation time to set up cages/pens the week before the fair, clean and assist during the fair and take it all back down to store it and clean it for the next use after the fair? Did you know Lovelady Baptist Church brings a homecooked meal for all the carnival workers along with the fair staff? Did you know McCall’s clients help distribute fair books around the county, as well as, clean our bathrooms and come, afterwards, to clean up the grass and parking lots? Did you know United Rental brings over the lights for the back parking lot that help keep everyone safe? They also bring an ATV that helps with the Horse Show! Did you know Elite Tank brings over the tanks for the Commissioner’s Watermelon Feed and for the corn in the Kid’s Ag Zone? I don’t know very many other communities that have this small army of workers that come together, once a year, to put on a GREAT event that serves a vast amount of people! We live in a great place with a lot of great people!! THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!!!
