Is Zanzibar actually a viable base for remote work, or just a nice holiday?

I spent several months living there and ran real work days from cafĂŠs, beach clubs and a private apartment with a pool, 460 USD a month, all utilities included.

The internet works if you set it up right. The visa is straightforward. The cost of living is around 550 to 650 USD a month for a comfortable lifestyle. And the time zone is almost identical to Europe, so client calls still happen at normal hours.

People think being self-employed is all about freedom.

Sometimes it is.

Sometimes it’s sitting in a café in Zanzibar building a tax system because no tax advisor wants to take you on as a client 😅

After contacting around 20 tax advisors and getting almost only rejections, I decided to create my own solution.

So I spent part of my weekend building a tool with AI that automatically organizes invoices, expenses and tax-related documents.

Not the most exciting project.

But probably one of the most useful.

One thing I’ve learned:

The biggest productivity gains often don’t come from working harder.

They come from removing the same problem that keeps showing up over and over again.
