ECF 2026 Theme: Meerschaum 🪨

After discovering Eskişehir through jazz in 2025 🎷, this year we are deepening the story.

Together with music, we descend beneath the surface ⛏️
We touch the invisible layers of the city,
And root ourselves in the memory of Eskişehir 🌍

We invite you to discover the roots of the city as well.
Because this land is not merely a city;
It is also a layer that carries memory, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage ✨

Meerschaum is a unique heritage emerging from the soil of Eskişehir,
Found almost exclusively in this geography,
And transformed into art through centuries of patient craftsmanship in the hands of masters 🤲

This year, with ECF, just like meerschaum artisans,
We are taking the raw spirit of the city
And preparing to shape it through music, experience, and shared moments 🎶

While meerschaum exists in nature as a simple mineral,
Every master who touches it adds their own story to it.
Just like jazz… 🎺

An expression shaped through improvisation,
Reborn every single time,
A timeless form of expression.

We also see meerschaum — one of the rarest treasures Eskişehir offers to the world 🌎 —
As a way of approaching, through the language of art,
The subject of rare earth elements,
Which has increasingly become part of global conversations in Türkiye and around the world.

Therefore, ECF 2026 is not simply a festival;
It is a journey of discovery into the depths of Eskişehir 🖤

And we believe:
To truly take root in a city,
One must first touch its soil 🌱

🪨 Lületaşı (Meerschaum), one of the most valuable elements of Eskişehir, became the theme of Eskişehir Jazz Festival 2026.

🎷✨ We asked , our visual designer, what inspired him while creating the ECF visuals and how he developed the festival’s brand identity. Here is his response:

🎶 “My starting point was music.
I created geometric forms based on the structure of 32nd notes and built the foundation of the typography on this system. While this geometric language references musical notes, its sharp edges also nod to Eskişehir’s historical textures — especially the engravings in Yazılıkaya.

🪨 At the same time, meerschaum is a very soft material. So I softened the sharp corners of the letterforms in certain areas, creating smoother, more fluid transitions. In this way, I aimed to reflect both the texture of the material and the improvisational spirit of jazz within the typography.

🎼 Rather than designing the word “Lületaşı” in a static way, I composed it in a fragmented and dynamic layout inspired by note sequences. Slightly scattered, slightly free… much like jazz itself.

🌊 The processing of meerschaum also became an important part of the design. Before being used, the stone is cleaned of its outer layer of soil, leaving marks on its surface. Taking this as a reference, I separated these layers as vector masks and overlaid them. The resulting form resembled sound waves, which I then transformed into a pattern within the festival’s visual identity.

🎨 For the color palette, I chose a more vibrant and energetic approach to reflect the colorful world of jazz. To support this, I designed instrument icons and brought everything together within a unified visual language.”
