Long ago, during the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368), China was ruled by the Mongols. The people of China were unhappy with this foreign rule and longed to regain control of their homeland. However, the Mongols kept a tight grip on the country, and any hint of rebellion was quickly crushed. Organizing a large uprising seemed impossible, as the Mongols kept close watch on the people and their activities.
🥷But the Chinese rebels were determined, and they came up with a clever plan. At the heart of this plan was the mooncake—a small, round pastry traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Since the festival was widely celebrated, the mooncake seemed like an ordinary part of the festivities, making it the perfect disguise for something more.
📝 Zhu Yuanzhang (朱元璋), a leader of the rebels who would later become the founder of the Ming Dynasty, saw an opportunity. He and his followers devised a plan to hide secret messages inside the mooncakes. These messages carried detailed instructions for coordinating a rebellion against the Mongol rulers.
🥮As the Mid-Autumn Festival approached, the mooncakes were baked, but instead of just sweet fillings, they held notes that told the rebels when and where to strike. These mooncakes were then distributed to fellow rebels across the country, passing unnoticed under the Mongols' watchful eyes.
👑The night of the Mid-Autumn Festival arrived, and under the light of the full moon, the rebellion was set in motion. Thanks to the careful planning and the mooncake messages, the Chinese rebels were able to strike in unison. The Mongols were caught off guard, and the rebellion was a success. Soon after, the Yuan Dynasty was overthrown, and Zhu Yuanzhang became the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty.
