Re-Route Festival

Re-Route Festival Re-Route Festival is developed by Plus Collaboratives and supported by Singapore Tourism Board and DesignSingapore Council.

Created by award-winning duo Mervin Tan & Cheryl Sim of Plus Collaboratives, Re-Route: Orchard is a creative placemaking festival, a key event of Singapore Design Week happening from Sep 26 to Oct 6, 2024. The placemaking festival will immerse visitors in alternate storytelling of the Little India district through a collective of creative voices, to demonstrate how design can be used as a tool to

spotlight our heritage. With curated experiences, installations, programmes, and other design activations. Re-Route aims to encourage people to detour from their usual routes to explore the district with a new perspective and connect with Little India’s lesser-known history.

Exhibition Feature: Chairs Reimagined

Chairs Reimagined explores Singapore’s beloved Kopitiam chair as a canvas for transformation, where traditional design meets adaptive reuse. This exhibition rethinks the relationship between form and function, presenting creative interventions that give fresh context to this iconic chair. Each reimagined piece reflects evolving social behaviours, challenging our perceptions of everyday objects within the built environment.

Through a fun, interactive guessing game, guests and art lovers alike are invited to uncover the concepts and new purposes behind these innovative designs, sparking a deeper conversation about design, culture, and adaptability.

Re-Route Festival is happening again in Orchard Road, and here’s what to expect! 🔵

It’s been almost two years since the last Re-Route Festival in Little India, and it’s now happening again - this time, it’s in the vibrant shopping district, Orchard Road! It’s a creative festival that invites people to explore a specific neighbourhood in Singapore on a deeper level. 🎨

Ever since we were young, Orchard Road has always been the number one hangout spot for shopping or casual entertainment, with shopping malls all around. But there’s so many things that we didn’t know about this place despite its rich history beyond shopping, like how it used to be a nutmeg plantation. Re-Route made the whole experience interactive and enjoyable for people of all ages, with installations all around the area such as a ‘nostalgic’ playground inside , and an art market that’s happening in .singapore. 🛍

It’s free for everyone to participate, and it will be happening all the way till 6 October. There’s plenty of workshops and activities to be part of, so if you guys wanna find out more about what’s going down, make sure to check out their website at reroutefest.com!

The Projector has long been a sanctuary for those seeking an alternative—a space where creativity thrives and differences are embraced. Founded by Karen Tan, it has grown into a cultural haven, blending indie and mainstream films with quirky spaces and cross-cultural exchanges, offering a true alternative to Singapore’s everyday routine.

As part of Re-Route: Orchard Road, Singapore Design Week 2024, The Projector at Cineleisure proudly presents Class Acts by Deon Phua and Hwee En Tan, alongside Scene UnSeen by Abdul Nizam. This programme explores the power of design and creativity, honouring the pioneers who shaped Singapore’s cultural landscape. Class Acts revisits the ’90s, telling the stories of trailblazers who sparked a creative revolution. Scene UnSeen highlights the resilience of Singapore’s underground music scene.

Upcoming showcases include Kurosawa Kanpai!, a tribute to Akira Kurosawa, and Golden Mile Revisited, a nostalgic look at the iconic Golden Mile Complex.

Join us on 26th September at Re-Route: Orchard as we celebrate the individuals and movements that reflect the power of design in shaping the world around us.

Anyone who has started a business knows that surviving beyond a year is a challenge, let alone 20+ years. Far East Plaza is home to many heritage stores like Clancy Boutique Alteration Centre, each with its own unique story and memories. What they all share is a remarkable talent for continuity.

As part of Re-Route: Orchard, which celebrates creative placemaking with the theme of adaptation, Clancy Boutique stands as a fine example of how adaptability and resilience define success. With over 20 years of experience, this alteration shop has mastered the art of transformation, continually evolving to meet the needs of its diverse clientele.

Their dedication to their craft and capacity to embrace change reflect the festival’s theme of adaptation—reimagining and revitalising the familiar to create a lasting impact.

Come this 26th, join us as we celebrate the rich heritage of Orchard Road, showcasing a diverse and enduring community.

DEPRESSION’s SECTS SHOP has become a staple in Singapore’s fashion scene, known for its avant-garde approach and innovative designs.

Fashion designers Kenny Lim and Andrew Loh met in 2002 while working in advertising—Kenny as a Copywriter and Andrew as an Art Director. In 2006, they founded DEPRESSION to overcome the monotony of life, creating a genderless, monochromatic label inspired by the darker side of the human psyche.

Since then, DEPRESSION has collaborated with names like Casio and Leslie Kee, judged major fashion competitions, and showcased collections at Seoul and Berlin Fashion Weeks. In 2014, they launched Sects Shop, a multi-label concept store introducing avant-garde and artisanal fashion to Singapore.

This year, DEPRESSION’s creation for Re-Route: Orchard features a versatile piece constructed from breathable waterproof fabric, symbolising the stages of a rainstorm. “For Rainy Days” includes a drawstring bag for dry spells, a detachable hooded accessory for rain, and a maxi-length kimono-esque raincoat for downpours, reminding us to be ready for life’s storms.

Discover Orchard Road’s Hidden Gem: Kurasu Singapore’s “The Stand”

Don’t miss out on their special festival coffee: “Cascara Lemon Fizz.”

This refreshing blend features cascara cold brew—a delicate infusion made from the dried skins of coffee cherries—combined with zesty lemon syrup and a splash of soda. It’s a perfect brew created exclusively for Kurasu Singapore x Re-Route: Orchard.

Conceived in late 2021, Kurasu Orchard Stand brings Japanese speciality coffee to the heart of Singapore’s busiest shopping district. Despite the challenge of a smaller space, their collaboration with local design firm Retro Colony (R.C. REMOD) made this vision a reality. The stand’s stained oak and wooden trimmings evoke nostalgia, reminiscent of traditional buildings, offering a cosy, simple escape in the city.

Come and experience the charm of Kurasu “The Stand” for yourself!

“Even discarded items can have moments of brilliance.”
—Kenny Hong, Founder of 11H

This sculptural coffee table reimagines the role of worn-out magazines and ratchet tie-downs, turning them into striking elements of design. Drawing inspiration from design books and everyday objects, 11H harnesses the beauty of simplicity to elevate overlooked materials, showcasing how even the most unexpected items can become objects to be appreciated.

Curious to see how discarded materials become design icons? Catch the full reveal of 11H’s creation and other innovative designs at Re-Route: Orchard!
