As part of our fund-raising series for the Transylvanian Arts Festival, we are thrilled to offer the rare chance to view this incredible and moving film by Dragos Lumpan about a fast fading way of life.

This really is an incredible film, taking us into the world of shepherds who walk with their animals very long distances in search of food. Filmed in six countries over fifteen years, it portrays an ancient way of life not compatible with the modern world. This is a moving and inspiring story of the stubbornness of those who continue to sleep among their sheep under the clear sky - the remaining few who still live under the stars.
The Transylvanian Arts Festival was founded by Lucy Abel Smith in 2013, in the village where she has a house in Romania. The not-for-profit festival gave this remarkable film it premier and we are inviting you to join us for a unique opportunity to view ‘The Last Transhumance’ by Dragos Lumpan. His photographs are exhibited nationally and internationally and are in private and public collections, including European Central Bank Art Collection in Frankfurt and National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest.

Tickets are £20 per person. RSVP to: [email protected]

We would like to thank Lord and Lady Faringdon and James and Lucinda Henderson for their generosity in allowing us to use the theatre at Buscot. They have kindly invited all guests for private drinks after the film showing.

Transylvanian Book Festival, one of Transylvania’s most distinctive cultural gatherings, takes on a new identity. Beginning in 2026, it will be known as the Transylvanian Arts Festival — a name that reflects the true breadth of an event that has always been about far more than books. Held in the picturesque village of Richiș in the Târnava Valley, the festival will again bring together writers, historians, musicians, and lovers of culture from across Europe who honor Romania — a land of stories, art, and enduring beauty.

In Memoriam
David Francis Abel Smith
2 February 1940-24 December 2024

Patron, friend, passionate supporter of the Transylvanian Book Festival and beloved husband of its founder, Lucy. Always the first to get up and lead the dance we remember Dave here, dancing on the last evening of the festival in 2018. To paraphrase the words of a beautiful Romanian funeral lament: ‘o man, o tree, do not weep, do not pity, but be happy, be happy that your root, dying in the ground has struck new roots in heaven... so all you men and women, drink and eat, sing, and dance that he has only gone back to the place from where he came…'

May Dave’s warm, welcoming smile, generous spirit and irrepressible sense of fun remain with us.

A memorial service for Dave will be held at St Mary’s Church in Fairford on 6 February at 2pm UK time. The service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend and can be accessed via the first comment below.

Following on from this week’s ‘Super Thursday’, the launch day of a staggering 1,900 books, today is . Naturally any book with Romania in its title catches my eye so it was ‘Sophie from Romania’ by Rory Cellan-Jones which I first spotted among all the new titles in the enticing windows of the lovely Hedgehog Bookshop in Penrith, Cumbria, where an extremely inviting sofa and a welcome to whippets awaits inside…

Alex Drace-Francis must surely win the prize for most colour-coordinated speaker at the festival, with an eye-catching outfit that perfectly complemented his excellent talk on 'The Making of Mamaliga', the subject of his latest book looking at the impact of maize on Romanian diet and culture. He also taught us some mamaliga expressions such as 'Stai, mămăliga, sã te mănânc - 'stay there mamaliga and I'll eat you' (as a reproach to an idle person) and 'A prins mămaliga coajã' - the mamaliga has got a crust (to someone putting on airs and graces). Alex also whipped up some mamaliga for our delectation, with a little help from the kitchen. And thanks to our brilliant sound and light maestro Marius Marcoianu he even got a matching mike. Photographs thanks to Bronwen Riley and Judith-Rose Somerset.

We hold many events in Richis church but I think this picture was taken on the first day of this year's festival, just before Ciprian Firea's talk on those well educated and travelled parish priests who were also patrons of their churches during the Transylvanian Renaissance. There was clearly keen anticipation in any event! Photograph by Otto Ekeles. Please keep your photographs coming!
