I have always been drawn to sculpture, to the act of shaping matter with my hands, feeling the resistance of clay, the mark a finger leaves, the life that hides in imperfection. In 2017, at Assamblage in Bucharest, I encountered jewellery for the first time, and something clicked: classical techniques, a contemporary vision, and a material that could hold the memory of touch permanently. I never stopped seeing jewellery as sculpture. Each piece begins as a modelled form. Through the lost wax process, its raw texture, gesture, and deliberate irregularities travel into metal and remain there, held in silver. This collection is my first. It is how I see myself as a maker.

Măști is the debut collection of Atelier Mascari: seven unique pieces in fine 925 silver, inspired by the characters of Romanian ceremonial masks. Drawn from winter rites of renewal, fertility, transformation, and the symbolic death and rebirth of nature, the collection reflects traditions whose imagery may preserve echoes of pre Christian belief. Each piece begins as a hand modelled form and is cast using the lost wax technique, preserving the raw texture, the gesture, and the intentional imperfection in the final silver. Not reproductions, but interpretations: ancestral memory cast in precious metal.

In focus today - Roxana Davidescu (Romania)

Roxana Davidescu has been creating designer jewellery for 20 years. Roxana has a passion for objects, so her jewellery carries a memory engraved in the material, yet is reborn in silver, gold and titanium, with grandeur and simplicity. Her creations are sometimes whimsical beyond all expectations, extravagant, saturated with colour, melancholic or antique. She navigates boldly through styles and clichés, deconstructing myths before reconstructing them with a contemporary twist. Key exhibitions: Author, MNAR Ilias Lallaunis (2008), Joya Barcelona (2013), Premium Messe Berlin (2011), Pret-à-Porter Paris (2010), RDW (2017, 2019).

The charm of simplicity. The Pipe of Peace – reminds us of the ancient tradition of reconciliation, of resolving conflicts and tensions. Thanks to the circular arrangement, in which the distances vary but do not exceed the diameter, the face-to-face positioning marks the point at which dialogue becomes possible, whilst discussion and listening ease the tension. It is both silence and a visual message, the hope for better times – those of Peace. Sometimes, the solution to the most complicated situations lies right before our eyes; we just need to look carefully at the world around us. So – Look!

Collection 1 - Field Conditions was created while my home country was experiencing violence, internet shutdowns, and the silencing of its people. Being physically distant, I witnessed a reality where voices were present but could not be heard. Iron filings suspended within glass forms become a metaphor for bodies held within invisible constraints. Activated by magnetic forces, they shift, gather, and disperse, suggesting both control and resistance. The collection carries an ongoing relevance, reflecting a condition of fragility, pressure, and unresolved tension that continues to shape both personal and collective experience.

Collection 2 - Shrapnel Garden was created in response to the bombardment of my country and to what I witnessed from a distance: images of damaged homes, fragments of buildings, and stories of people returning to places that had once been theirs. Someone I knew returned to their home after it had been bombed. There was almost nothing left to find. The familiarity of a home, its objects, its order, and its sense of safety had disappeared. I began working with silver through melting, fusing, and soldering, allowing the material to deform rather than trying to control it completely. The resulting pieces are irregular, fragmented, and sometimes sharp. Cavities, solder marks, and traces of heat remain deliberately visible. I did not want to finish these pieces into perfection. War does not leave perfect surfaces behind. It ruptures, burns, displaces, and transforms. Polishing away every trace of the process would have contradicted what these pieces are trying to hold. Yet some of the forms that emerged from this destruction began to resemble something organic, almost as though they were growing. This contradiction became Shrapnel Garden: a garden made from fragments, where beauty and violence occupy the same material.

Echoes in the Blur examines the shifting nature of memory through a series of wearable jewellery and vessels. Using techniques such as knot casting, beading, and layering, the project explores how memories are held, distorted, and reassembled over time. Materials such as frosted quartz and mother of pearl are chosen for their translucent, hazy qualities—mirroring the way memory fades or fragments. Chuhan frames the body as both vessel and memory site, where inner emotion takes external, physical shape. Through tactile contrasts of softness and rigidity, Echoes in the Blur becomes a meditation on what it means to remember, and how jewellery can hold what words often cannot.

Chuhan Xiao is a London-based jewellery designer and silversmith, educated at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art. Her practice challenges the conventional boundaries of jewellery, shifting it from ornament to intimate sculpture. Exploring self-identity and memory, her work investigates how the body becomes a site of emotional resonance and personal narrative. Through pieces, she wishes to invite the wearers to imprint their own narratives and emotions onto them. Chuhan is drawn to the traces we leave behind—how touch, time, and memory linger in form. In this way, jewellery becomes not just something wearable, but something that remembers.

In focus today - Shir Hadad - part of Global Creative Graduate Showcase by artsthread

Shir Hadad (b.1997) is a metalsmith and designer-maker whose work bridges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary expression. She graduated from the Jewelry and Fashion Department at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, where she also worked as a teaching assistant in pattern making and stone setting. Her work has been presented internationally, including at UNFOLD, Milan Design Week (2025), the Puyuan International Biennale for Contemporary Jewellery Art and Design, China (2025), and the Global Creative Graduate Showcase 2025. Her work was also exhibited at the Eye Level exhibition at the Premieres Festival and at the Ben Ami Gallery in Tel Aviv. She has received several awards, including the Blanche and Romie Shapiro Judaica Award, the Evelyn Prize, and the Reshbel Prize for Academic Excellence.

LeShem Yichud - This work explores the connection between ritual, memory, and physical action. It was inspired by the act of extracting scent from myrtle leaves – a gesture rooted in personal experience. Each tool in the series invites touch and movement, emphasizing the body’s role in creating meaning. The emotional drive stemmed from a desire to slow down, pause, and reexamine habitual gestures – to give attention to what is often automatic, and to transform it into an intentional, sensory experience. Traditional silversmithing techniques such as forging, raising, and casting were used in the making of these objects.

With degrees in Product Design and Chemistry, I focus my interest on the study of materiality underlying each process and creation. I seek to recover the narrative embedded within objects, with a particular interest in the lived experiences and cultural traditions of their origins. I admire and engage with artisanal disciplines in all their forms. Colour, texture, trace, touch, matter, as well as change and degradation, constitute the foundation and inspiration of my creative practice.

Contemporary Peasantry: Restoration of the Whistled Memory explores a collection of three 925 silver pieces developed in collaboration with Tous, moving from the rural landscape to the domestic sphere. The project honors and reclaims whistled communication as a non-verbal code within the family nucleus, as well as its transgenerational transmission. The resulting objects are conceived as both wearable and exhibition pieces, with a universal and inclusive character. They aim to guide the viewer’s gesture towards reflection and curiosity about the preservation of this practice, creating a lasting material trace that resists the passage of time.

In focus today - Ofir Azrad - part of Global Creative Graduate Showcase by artsthread

Jewelry and accessories designer and graduate of the Jewelry Design Department at Shenkar College. Trained in traditional goldsmithing techniques and experienced in digital design tools including Rhino 3D, Illustrator, and Photoshop, combining craftsmanship with contemporary technology in both independent and collaborative work. My design process is research-driven, exploring materials, symbols, and cultural narratives, and transforming them into wearable objects that balance functionality, emotion, and personal expression. My work reflects an interest in the relationship between body, identity, and storytelling through jewelry. In 2025, I was nominated for the Global Creative Graduate Showcase competition and won the Public Vote award in the category of Fine Art, Photography, Craft and Jewelry.

In my project “Bli Ayin Hara”, I explore superstitions and protective charms from a personal perspective, aiming to bridge tradition and innovation. The project examines the amulet not only as a protective object but also as one with emotional value—especially in moments of breakage or loss. Does its power fade when it breaks, or does the emotional connection grow stronger? I also explore the idea of multiplicity: is one amulet enough, or does having more enhance our feeling of safety? The jewelry pieces were created from a personal connection to the Moroccan tradition I grew up with, and f rom a desire to design a collection that weaves together cultural heritage and a modern design language.
