***3 x 3 Core Principles***
2nd article of a 3-part series on Coaching 3 x 3
1. Dictate the Pace Immediately
Read how the other team plays you, be sure that you break either the defensive and offensive timing at each possession.
* As soon as your side gets the rebound or inbound, the ball handler dictates the pace and gets to initiate the corresponding read which will lead to a reaction. From a triple threat position at the inbound, shoot a 3-ball from top of the key when you’re open, pass or hand off when someone’s open, and drive when no one is open. In rebound situations, pass off to the corner immediately or initiate hand offs prior to starting an attack. Quick decision making is key. Move the ball around at top speed, always.
*Primary objective is to take a high percentage shot in less than 4 seconds just before the defense could figure out how to react to what you’re doing. 12 second shot clock per possession is allowed, at this pace you could get off at least three tries at scoring a basket.
2. Space the Floor
* Shooters run to the 3-point line to extend defenses. Again, shoot when you’re open. Pass when someone is open, and drive to the basket when no one is open.
* Should you have Bigs who can create mismatches, have them sprint downhill to the rim.
* This spacing stretched defenses thin.
*Everyone one on the team must develop exceptional ball handling and rebounding skills, shooting accuracy, defensive intensity, and quick decision making, since 3 x 3 hoops is all about playing positionless.
3. Pick-and-roll as Bread and Butter
* Always start at these positions, as the primary action of attack.
1. Ball Handler - wing-base (low block)
2. Ball Handler - wing – wing
3. Ball Handler - stack -stack
4. Ball Handler- Ball Side Cutter – Wing
5. Ball handler – Base - Wing
Possible Scenarios:
a. Ball Handler could drive and kick to shooters when defenders sag for help to clog the lane.
b. Pick setter could roll hard to the basket for a lob or an easy lay in.
c. Ball Handler could pull up for a jumper.
d. Wing could initiate feigned hand off and cut downhill from the ball side for a lay up.
e. Wing and Base gives a double screen to Ball Handler for a drive, or a kick out pass to whoever hard roller is freed up.
4. Outside Shooting is given the Green Light
* Players are encouraged to take the first good, open look (especially open 3s, mid-range Jumpers or layups).
* No holding the ball, no over-dribbling.
Tendencies and Observations:
1. Across all age groups at the grassroots level, most teams play as if they are in 5 x 5 mode. Meaning, slower, grind-it-out, and isolation style. Instinct would dictate they’d dribble the possession away. Quicker and well-conditioned teams can exploit adversaries that aren’t built and wired to defend at high speed.
2. Constant, fluid, and cohesive quick decisions forces defenses into mismatches or rotations. Remember: SHOOT when you’re OPEN. PASS when someone’s OPEN. And DRIVE when NO ONE is OPEN.
3. Ball Handler’s decision making and vision + shooting threats mean defenses couldn’t afford to leave anyone open. Make it a point to confuse defenses at all times.
Example Possession (Gone in 4 seconds or less)
1. Inbound → Ball Handler fakes a Pass while wingmen give each other picks as misdirection, then shoots a 3-ball. (2 seconds).
2. Wing shooters sprint from the corners to give each other screens, Ball Handler passes the ball to either of the Wing men freed up by the action, catch and shoot (2–3 seconds).
3. From Ball handler – Wing -Base formation, Base sets a high screen for some Pick and Roll action. Should defense adjust quickly, an extra pass to the wing man from the weak side will lead to an open lane for a makeable layup. (3–4 seconds).
4. Ball Handler as the Point of Attack, SHOOT when you’re OPEN. PASS when someone’s OPEN. And DRIVE when NO ONE is OPEN.
Based on the fundamental decision-making principle,
-Should defense sag and collapses, pass to corner shooter.
-Should help defense comes late, lob or bounce pass to big or base.
-Should defense goes under, half arm’s length worth of free space allows ball handler to pull the trigger on mid-range jumper.
You’re all gone in 4 seconds or less.
In summary 3 x3 basketball is all about playing at a structured speed which involves spacing, pick-and-rolls, and TRUSTING in one another’s ability to make a shot anywhere on the court.
Hopefully, we see this brand of basketball played in La Trinidad, Benguet when Team Ao1 hits the road again, but this time in the Cordilleras as we continue to teach one, each one, reach one for the Audience of One.
La Liga Trinidad, thanks for the images.
