In recent days, we have once again witnessed how fragile human life is. A sudden and powerful earthquake shook our communities, leaving behind ruins, tears, and unanswered questions. In just an instant, buildings that took years to construct crumbled, lives that seemed secure were lost, and families were left broken.
Despite all our human progressโour science, technology, and strengthโwe remain powerless before the mysteries of nature and the will of God. Truly, this reminds us that in an instant, God can take away everything we hold on to: our possessions, our homes, even our very lives. Yet even in loss, there is one thing that cannot be destroyed: God Himself, who remains with us, comforting and guiding us in the storm.
Calamities are moments that reveal the truth about our human condition. We are not as strong as we think we are. We may boast of our knowledge, our inventions, and our structures, but in a single moment, they can all collapse. This is not to frighten us, but to remind us of humilityโthat we are creatures, not the Creator. We are completely dependent on God, who gives life and who, in His wisdom, can also take it away. As the Scriptures remind us: โThe Lord gives, and the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord.โ
Yet, amid destruction, there is also light. The ruins of buildings are matched by the rise of compassion. Volunteers risk their lives to save strangers. Communities share food and water. Medical teams work without rest. Government officials and soldiers serve to restore order. In this way, we see that though calamities strip us of material things, they also reveal the treasure of the human spiritโthe love, courage, and solidarity that reflect the very heart of God.
But most importantly, these tragedies invite us back to prayer. Too often, in times of comfort and success, we forget our dependence on God. We trust too much in our own strength. Yet an earthquake shakes not only the ground but also our hearts, reminding us that we need Him every moment of our lives. Even when churches collapse, God is not absent. He is with us in the tears of those who mourn, in the arms of families comforting each other, and in the selfless service of rescuers and volunteers.
Our prayers today are for the souls of the victims who lost their lives so suddenly, that they may find peace in the eternal embrace of God. We pray for the families who mourn, that they may be given strength and hope. We remember the volunteers, medical teams, and leaders who serve tirelessly, that their efforts may be blessed and fruitful. And we pray for ourselves, that we may learn the lessons of these calamities: that life is fleeting, that possessions are temporary, but that faith, hope, and love endure forever.
The earthquake has left us shaken, but it has also reminded us of an essential truth: in an instant, God can take away all that we hold dear. Life is fragile, and nothing in this world is permanent. But we should not despair, because even as everything falls apart, God remains. He is our rock, our refuge, and our strength.
Let these calamities be not only tragedies but also lessons. They teach us to live humbly, to love deeply, to pray unceasingly, and to help one another. Above all, they remind us to anchor our lives not in material wealth or human achievements but in God alone, who is eternal. For though the earth may shake and the mountains may crumble, His love will never fail.
Let us pray:
Loving and Merciful Father,
in this time of sorrow and trial, we turn to You. We remember all our brothers and sisters who have lost their lives in the earthquakeโgrant them eternal rest in Your presence. Comfort the families who grieve, heal the wounded, and strengthen those who have lost everything. Bless the volunteers, rescuers, and leaders who serve tirelessly; reward their sacrifices with Your grace.
Lord, teach us to be humble before You, for in an instant You can take away all that we cling to. Yet remind us always that though everything may pass away, You remain with us, unshaken and faithful. Help us to live with faith, hope, and love, so that even in calamities we may see Your guiding hand and trust in Your will. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.โค๏ธ
