History

The root word “Ammungan”, an original Gaddang word, is easily understood by all ethnic groups in Nueva Vizcaya because its root word that connotes “gathering” is also found in the Iluko dialect “ummungan”, with the same meaning. The Iluko dialect is the common language used in inter-communication among all ethnic groups in the province, thus the common understanding of the word “ammungan.”

A 1986 cultural showcase dubbed “ammungan,” hosted by the Nueva Vizcaya Historical Foundation under former Governor Ruth R. Padilla, popularized the term. In this event, some identified ethnic groups such as the Bugkalots, Gaddangs, Ikalahans, Kalanguyas, Isinais, Iwaks, Ibalois, Kankana-eys, Ifugaos (particularly Ayangans and Tuwalis) and some other ethno-linguistic groups were highlighted in a grand gathering.

In the early 1990’s, the founding anniversary was named Vizcaya Week. From 1996-2008, it was named “Panagyaman Festival”. Then in 2009, it was named “Grand Ammungan Festival” and has since been known as such.

The Grand Ammungan Festival, as it is known today, is a grand gathering in thanksgiving of all the distinct indigenous tribes collectively called “Tribu Biscayano”. It is an expression of unity, gratefulness and graciousness of Novo Vizcayanos. It is a collective manifestation of the natural embodiment of Novo Vizcayano’s heritage. It is a venue to highlight all that is good (values, virtues, practices, customs, costumes, implements, songs, dances and food) in the province, and allow each Novo Vizcayano to appreciate his or her heritage and identity as people of Nueva Vizcaya.
