The 2026 Awa Backyard Ultra is an affliated event of the Big's Backyard Ultra Association. This means our event set-up, course and rules will all align with the rules set by them for affliated events.

As an affiliated Backyard event, Awa Backyard Ultra participant performances are eligible to earn a spot on a National Team for the Satellite Team Championships and the World Individual Championships at Big’s Backyard in Tennessee.

The Awa Backyard Ultra and Backyard 6.

Saturday 26 September 2026 - That Place MTB Park, Kaiwhaiki Road, Whanganui.

A new format for 2026. A 6.7km loop. A new lap on the hour, every hour until there is one runner remaining. How long will we run for? Welcome to The Awa Backyard Ultra - the ultimate test of physical and mental endurance.

If that sounds a bit too much. The Awa Backyard 6 offers up the same course and format, but for "only" 6 hours. A great introduction to the world of Backyards with the extreme suffering of the main event. Challenge yourself to 2 or 3 laps or try for the whole 6.

Entries open on Monday (1 December) at 9am.

2026 event announcement.

Hi Awa followers...

Last week we had to make the difficult decision to cancel the 2025 Awa Adventure Run.

A combination of low entry numbers and rising costs greatly increased the risk that we wouldn't be able to deliver an event that meets the expectations of participants.

All entrants were emailed about the cancellation last Thursday. We will also be in contact individually to discuss the details needed to process refunds.

What does the future hold for the Awa Adventure Run? No decision has been made about future events beyond this year. If there is a resurgence in support for events like this, we will definitely consider an event for 2026.

We are also exploring other event options in the Whanganui region.
