We love it when our guests adventure out into the Catlins region!
It's an epic wild nature environment with an untouched feel.
We do commonly encounter sealions who NEED their space. This is very good advice from up the coast. Please take note, stay safe and respect our unique wildlife 😉🥰
If you’ve visited St Clair Esplanade recently and felt all at sea because of the absence of the Mum sea lion sculpture, don’t worry.
The sculpture was recently removed for some much-needed TLC (minor repairs and painting) and will be re-installed next week.
This coincides with sea lion breeding season.
In November-December, male sea lions will be pursuing female mates. During this time, they can be protective of their area.
So please keep a keen eye out for all our beach users. Knowing how to act around sea lions is important for everyone’s wellbeing:
• Stay at least 10m-20m away
• If you find yourself too close, back away slowly and avoid direct eye contact
• Keep dogs on leash in areas where there are sea lions
• If you see a sick or injured sea lion, do not approach! Call 0800 DOC HOT
