My successes are not mine alone, they are ours - the greatest successes we will have are from working together.
This year, Te Kapa o Hurupaki was established. Our very first whakataetae rōpū (competitive group) who campaigned all year towards competing in “Te Tai Tokerau Mana Kuratahi Kapa Haka Regionals 2024.”
This has been a huge learning and growth journey for all, but with so many proud moments. It was certainly a kaupapa that wouldn’t have been possible without the expertise, vision and passion of our pūkenga Hōrihi Mānihera. Hōrihi composed the majority of our bracket telling pūrākau of the hapū local to our kura, Ngāti Kahu o Torongare. We also would like to acknowledge the leadership and āwhina of our tumuaki Danny Clarkson, the whanaungatanga and mahi ā-rōpū from our kapa whānau, the manawanui and mahi tahi of our kaiako Whaea Miringa & Whaea Kaylah and of course the hard work, dedication and commitment our tamariki have made throughout the year — a true example of the aroha and passion they have for kapa haka.
On Saturday 19th October, Te Kapa o Hurupaki travelled to Kaikohe and stood on stage competing against 19 other kura, both kura kaupapa Māori and auraki (mainstream) in “Te Mana Kuratahi Regionals 2024.” Led by our two kaitātaki Teina Kauri and Wai Manu Hetaraka our rōpū performed with mana and ā-wairua, leaving a lasting impression.
Te Kapa o Hurupaki walked away with the following awards:
- Kaitātaki Tāne - 3rd Place overall
- 2nd place overall for the primary school division
Karawhiua Te Kapa o Hurupaki! Haramai ngā rangatira o Hurupaki 👏🏽
