ANITA HUTCHINS is a Wellington based choreographer, dancer, and writer who has been teaching the art of dance since 2009. She is passionate about collaboration, visual installation, and using analogue retro technology.
Anita trained at The Royal Ballet School London(1998-2000) and then spent 8 years performing with ballet and contemporary companies in Europe and NZ including:
Bayerisches Staatsballett, Munich Germany
Netherlands Dans Theatre II, Holland
The Royal New Zealand Ballet
Phoenix Dance Theatre, Leeds UK
In 2006 Anita graduated from Avalon Film and TV School and following this, she ended up in front of the camera winning the NZ TV show ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ (2006). Anita has a BA majoring in Philosophy from Victoria University of Wellington (2011), and is a trained Mediator (2024).
Anita has 16-years of experience teaching ballet and contemporary dance to beginners through to vocational students, and she adjudicates within NZ. She currently teaches at Wellington Dance Academy, Chilton Ballet Academy, and Blue Cloud Dance.
Anita continues to perform and create work in Wellington.
In 2020 Anita was part of Java Dance “Metamorphosis Artist” collaborative project and in 2023 she went on tour with Java Dance Company to China.
Since 2020 Anita has been in the cross-disciplinary collaboration Jake & Anita with guitarist Jake Church. Together they created “Scrúbi” which was first performed in 2021, and has since been workshopped in schools and holiday programmes. In 2024 they created and performed “VERBS” - a music/dance/photography installation in the Wellington Fringe Festival. In 2023 they released their single “Water and Coins”, in 2025 their album “Out Of The Blue”, and “Upside Down” their EP is set to be released in July 2026.
