PRESS RELEASE 29.4.2024
Fresh Faces and Renowned Veterans Vie for Top Honours at Tainui Waka Kapa Haka Festival
The thrilling energy of kapa haka vibrated through GLOBOX Arena, Claudelands at the weekend for the Tainui Waka Kapa Haka Festival. This electrifying atmosphere reflects a surge in kapa haka participation across the nation. Over 50 teams will vie for national glory in 2025, surpassing the 45 groups that took the stage at the 2023 event held in Auckland.
Although 22 groups were originally registered for the competition, one group withdrew from performing, and another withdrew from the competitive component of the event. The 20 groups officially on the competition roster culminated in five teams qualifying to represent Tainui Waka at Te Matatini 2025 at Te Kāhui Maunga, Taranaki.
The lesser than intended number of competitive kapa is regrettable, as it has adversely affected the progression of 6th placed, Hauraki Kōwhao Rau, who made history with a powerful debut performance for the iwi of Hauraki.
Mōtai Tangata Rau, the overall winners at the regional competition, made a triumphant return after a five-year hiatus. Te Pae Kahurangi, a composite team to Te Iti Kahurangi, also qualified to represent Tainui Waka in 2025, who are the second edition to the three established veterans who represented Tainui in 2023.
1st - Mōtai Tangata Rau
2nd - Te Pou-o-Mangataawhiri
3rd - Te Iti Kahurangi
4th - Te Kapa Haka o Ngā Pua o Te Kōwhara
5th - Te Pae Kahurangi
Media Release Ends.

"Mahia te mahi, hei painga mō te iwi". Kei ngā kākā whakatakapōkai o te kaupapa, te hāpaiō i whakarewa ai i Ngā P**i o Matariki ki te pae, e kore te puna mihi e mutu ki a koutou katoa. To the unsung heroes of our kaupapa - volunteers, kaiako, tutors, mātua, ringawera, composers, the understanding sports coaches, the committee, and everyone else in between, thank you for your love of the kaupapa.
Waimarie tātou i ngā kapa katoa i whakatinana i te kaupapa. Whakatairangahia kia tika! Inā te āpōpō o Te Whare Haka o Tainui.
Although the livestream has been taken down, our iwi radio stations have a plan to continue sharing the kaupapa with the masses. Thank you for your patience 🙂
