Morena Rise & Shine it’s parkrunday and what a special one it’s going to be as it’s the inaugural event for the brand spanking new Raumanga Stream parkrun. A very special parkrun at Hobsonville Point parkrun commemorating Anzac Day and celebrating the life of Colin Thorne as well as catching up with many of the fantastic parkrunners I’ve gotten to know over the years. It maybe a while before I get back so it was a bittersweet moment for me but I’m sure I’ll see many of them at other parkruns during touristing adventures👍

It was also great to say hi to fellow YouTuber Sam Thom who is doing an awesome job of promoting the fun of parkrunning around New Zealand albeit he’s at the very front end of the field compared to my slower style😄. Get over to his channel and make sure to like & subscribe-

It’s taken me a couple of days to fully absorb the sad news that the Mighty Kauri of the North is no longer with us. Colin had the ability to make everyone feel special and we were all the better for knowing such an amazing man.

He spanned the generations and made a difference to all our lives by just being himself. I recall when talking with him at his 102nd birthday parkrun event I asked how he felt about being called a legend all the time. His reply was not surprising - “I’m not special, I’m just Colin”.

I’ve had another look at the video I did on Whangarei parkrun last year not long after Colin’s 101st birthday and had the pleasure of walking and talking with him. I’ve posted the link below and you can forward to the 5min 25sec mark if you want to go directly to our chat. Here are some of the Colin “truisms” that he shared with us and helps to understand what made him so remarkable -

“If you want to live longer you got to exercise……”

“With parkrun it doesn’t matter where you finish there are no winners or losers……”

“I started running when I was 64, it’s never too late…..”

…..and there’s more where these came from. Colin will remain in our hearts forever and his indomitable spirit is now a big part of the magic that is parkrun❤️
