Looking Back – A Remarkable Edition

This year’s edition of Summertime Festival has been one of the most successful so far — with great music, beautiful weather, an incredible crowd, and the best turnout to date.

The festival’s new direction, with a full focus on Latin music and dance, clearly paid off. The workshops between concerts added a new level of depth, allowing the audience to engage more actively and experience the music in the way it was truly intended — with movement, rhythm, and connection.

Summertime continues to offer a unique blend of artistic depth and cultural credibility, bringing together a broad cross-section of The Hague’s diverse community. Mission accomplished.

One of the highlights was seeing masters — teachers from the conservatories — perform alongside their students and apprentices. This meeting of generations and cultures transcended borders and gave the festival a sense of continuity and shared purpose.

Summertime has become a true part of The Hague’s vibrant spirit — a celebration that feels inevitable and essential. Every year the crowd grows, and for three days each summer, The Hague becomes the Rio of the North Sea.

Saturday's Highlights – Part 2

The second half of the day started with a cumbia workshop by Latin Soul Dance. Participants learned basic steps, movement patterns, and rhythm typical of this Colombian dance style.

This was followed by La Procesión va por Dentro, a group blending cumbia with live electronic music. Their set brought together traditional percussion, bass, and synths in a layered, rhythmic performance.

Next was a samba de gafieira workshop, introducing the Brazilian partner dance known for its smooth footwork and ballroom-style flow.

In the early evening, Grupo Maracujá ft. Femke Smit took the stage with a set of samba de raiz. The group focused on traditional Brazilian samba with vocals, percussion, and guitar.

A mambo workshop followed, led by Residance Dorany, focusing on American-style mambo with partner coordination and musical timing.

The evening closed with Reyes del Mambo, a Latin big band centered on the mambo tradition. Their set featured brass, rhythm section, and vocals, rounding off the day with high-energy dance music.

Saturday's Highlights – Part 1

The day started with Samba Salad, a world music concert for children and their parents, featuring a mix of flamenco, samba, salsa, Latin jazz, pop, calypso, and Afrobeat.

This was followed by an Argentine tango workshop led by Louis and Lucia from Tango Hollanda. Participants were introduced to the basics of posture, leading, following, and connection.

Next on stage was the LocosLindos Tango Quintet from Rotterdam. With violin, bandoneon, piano, electric guitar, and double bass, they played modern arrangements of traditional tango.

Then came a pachanga workshop with Nelson John, founder of http://xn--salsamana-n5a.nl/ and national salsa champion from Venezuela. He taught solo pachanga steps, hip coordination, and Cuban-style groove.

The afternoon closed with Klavina ft. Claudia Ramos Barreto, performing chamber music from Cuba and Central America — a set marked by virtuosity and musical dialogue.

Summertime Festival Highlights – Friday, July 18th
The second day of the Summertime Festival brought South America’s tropical soul to The Hague’s Grote Markt, merging pulsing rhythms and sun-drenched melodies into a global celebration.

The evening launched with a spirited Timba dance workshop led by Salsamania Academy, where dancers of all ages moved to the upbeat pulse of Cuban music. That energy carried straight into a dazzling live set by Alfonso “El Coco” Herrera & Descarga Timbera, whose fierce salsa dura and Afro-Cuban grooves set the square in motion.

As twilight settled in, the festival shifted to the joyful sounds of Suriname. A lively Kaseko dance session with Rosa Maria led into one of the night’s highlights: Stephanie Nunes’ Surinam All Stars. With their rich blend of kaseko, kawina, and Afro-Caribbean rhythms, they delivered a performance that felt like a homecoming for many and a revelation for others.

The crowd stayed in motion with a Samba workshop by Fidelinas Entertainment, sparking a wave of smiles and swinging hips just in time for the festival’s electric finale.

Closing out the evening, Zuco 103 brought their signature Brazilectro sound to life – a seamless fusion of samba, bossa nova, and electronic beats. Their set turned the square into a tropical dance floor, pulsating with the spirit of Rio and the soul of The Hague.

Thursday's Highlights – Summertime Festival

Summer kicked off in style with a vibrant flamenco dance and clapping workshop led by Lizzy Verloop of Liz Dans Flamenco, drawing dozens of enthusiastic participants who were captivated from the very first compás.

Then came a real treat: The BvR Flamenco Big Band, an 18‑piece ensemble blending flamenco and jazz through a beautiful orchestral arrangement that mesmerized the entire crowd — a true discovery and a standout moment of the day.

The energy kept building with a lively salsa dance workshop from Latin Soul Dance Studio, laying the perfect foundation for To Mezclao Tradicional. They lit up the square and got everyone on their feet with their infectious mix of traditional and modern Cuban son.

A next‑level cha‑cha‑cha workshop kept the rhythm alive, and the evening closed with ZuleMax, a 12‑piece, all‑female salsa orchestra. Ladies to the front!
