Born in Yilan in 1990, Shih-Hsien Tsai graduated from Tainan National University of the Arts in 2014, where he studied with Professor Nai-Yueh Chang. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in Viola from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (2016), studying with the renowned Professor Nobuko Imai. He subsequently completed a Master’s degree in String Quartet (2018) at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under the guidance of the Quatuor Danel, followed by a postgraduate program at Nederlandse Strijkkwartet Academy in 2019, also with the Quatuor Danel. From 2019 to 2020, he continued his studies at the Hochschule
für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover in Germany with Professor Oliver Willem. He has participated in numerous international festivals, including the Île de Ré Music
Festival in France, the Viva la Viola Festival in Shanghai, the Viola Space Festival in Japan,
the Autumn Arts Festival, the Eslite Chamber Music Festival, and the Taiwan International
Festival of Arts. The concert performances have received high acclaim. He has also taken
part in masterclasses with Nobuko Imai, Sergey Malov, Micha Amory, Hsin-Yun Huang, and Ryo Sasaki, Principal Viola of the NHK Symphony Orchestra. In 2015, he was awarded Second Prize at the Fourth Dutch National Viola Competition and was invited to represent his school in a chamber music performance in Berlin that June. In 2020, he received Second Prize in the String Quartet category at the Mendelssohn University Competition. In addition to his solo career, he is also an active chamber musician. Since 2017, he has been invited by internationally renowned violinist and founder of Taiwan Connection (TC), Nai-Yuan Hu, to participate in lecture concerts, including a demonstration performance of Mozart’s String Quintet in G minor. The following year, he was invited to perform in the inaugural TC International Chamber Music Series and has since regularly
appeared in chamber music and orchestral performances.
He is currently Principal Viola of Ciconia Consort in The Hague, the Netherlands.
