Dear community,

We hope you and your families are safe and healthy.

This week we unfortunately had to decide to cancel the WCA European Championship 2020. Given the COVID-19 pandemic it is not realistic anymore to organize a championship of this scale this coming summer. It is very uncertain whether an event with so many competitors and visitors will be allowed by the authorities. And if so, it is expected that there still will be travel restrictions this summer, which will make travel from the rest of Europe (and the world) to the Netherlands problematic or even impossible.

Of course we have considered postponing the championship for a couple of months. Unfortunately the venue is not available later this year, so this is not an option.

Altogether, this means that there will be no European Championship in 2020. Obviously, this is not a decision we ever imagined we would need to take. We wanted nothing more than to offer you a fantastic experience this summer! So we are very sorry that we have to disappoint everyone who was looking forward to this event.

We will fully refund the fees paid by the competitors. We have some losses because of costs we already made. Thanks to our main sponsor Rubik's Brand Ltd these costs will be covered, which we are very grateful for. We will try to get all refunds done within two weeks.

We would like to thank everyone who contributed in the past year to this championship. Our sponsors Rubik's and Koninklijke Jumbo, the volunteers who were already working for us and who put an enormous amount of effort into this, the more than 260 (!) people who applied for a volunteer position during the championship, Almere City Marketing, the always helpful managers of the Topsportcentrum and many more... Many thanks, it was a pleasure to work with you.

We hope to welcome you in the Netherlands at another time and under better circumstances. We wish you all the best in this difficult period. Stay safe!

Next we will be visiting the political capital of the Netherlands, Den Haag.

The Hofvijver is a pond very close to the “Binnenhof”. The Binnenhof is located in the center of Den Haag and is considered to be the center of Dutch politics for the past centuries. Close to here you can find the Dutch parliament and facilities at which you can discover about Dutch history.

This week’s friday visits is about one of Amsterdam’s most iconic features, it’s canals!

The Amsterdam canals were originally created around the 17th century to protect the city and to control the water.

Nowadays it adds a lot to the image of the capital city and is one of the most popular tourist attractions. Many tourists stop by the canals to take pictures and others decide to use the canals for a tourist through the heart of Amsterdam by boat.

Despite all problems concerning the corona virus, the preparations for the European Championship continue. We still have 4 months to go and we are hopeful that by that time public life will be back to normal.

We will of course keep a close eye on developments and always consider whether we're doing the right things.

Stay safe!

This week’s friday visits is about the Rembrandtplein.

Rembrandtplein is located in the heart of Amsterdam and was named after Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn in 1669.

Rembrandtplein is a very well known place for it’s nightlife as it has many bars around it that you can enjoy in the evening. It is also a nice place to go for shopping during the day.

This week’s friday visits brings us to Amsterdam Centraal Station, this will likely be one of your first destinations in your WCA Euro 2020 journey.

Built between 1881 and 1889 Amsterdam Centraal is the second most visited station in the Netherlands with over 160.000 travellers every day.

As the name suggests, the station is very centralized with very good connection to pretty much all big cities in the Netherlands. Most other destinations within Amsterdam are also very well accessible. Therefor, Amsterdam Centraal will become a very common place for the real WCA Euro 2020 explorers 😉!

Kicking off friday visits with one of the most iconic places of Amsterdam.

The Rijksmuseum is one of the largest tourist attractions in Amsterdam. It contains historic paintings like the Nachtwacht by Rembrandt and De slag bij Waterloo. However, Rijksmuseum provides tours in which you can see many more great pieces of art!

At the foot of the Rijsmuseum you have Museumplein, it is a relaxing grass plain with a great view on the Rijksmuseum.

Museumplein is also known for hosting events such as the 2019 post season celebrations by AFC Ajax, during which Museumplein hosted over 100.000 football fans!

We are pleased to announce as the main sponsor of WCA European Championship 2020. We are grateful for their generous sponsorship and looking forward working together to present a great championship in Almere - the Netherlands this summer.

Almere and Rubik’s have much in common. As a city, Almere is only 43 years old; the city was born around the same time as the Rubik’s Cube. Both city and cube are a result of smart thinking and innovation, and both became world news. A perfect match!
