Marshal Abubakar (LP) criticizes the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), calling for urgent reforms following the death of 16-year-old Asar Sesugh in Makurdi on May 23, 2026.
According to Sesugh's mother, Jennifer Atsar, her son was arrested by EFCC officials, released on bail, and told to pay ₦100,000 before his seized phone would be returned. She alleges that after he failed to pay, EFCC officials tracked him down and shot him at close range. The EFCC denies this account, claiming Sesugh escaped lawful custody and was killed during an armed confrontation involving his associates.
Abubakar argues that the EFCC has a history of imposing excessive and unlawful bail conditions, such as requiring senior civil servants to stand as sureties and deposit property documents. He states that Nigerian courts have repeatedly condemned these practices as violations of constitutional rights and the presumption of innocence.
He further accuses the EFCC of abusing court processes by obtaining prolonged ex parte detention orders and acting as a debt recovery agency in civil disputes, practices he says are contrary to Nigerian law.
The statement concludes by demanding an immediate, independent, and impartial investigation into Sesugh's death. Abubakar describes the killing of the teenager and his alleged labeling as a cultist as suspicious and unacceptable, insisting that justice must be served for the family, society, and the rule of law.

Signed:
Marshal Abubakar, LP.
