Oyo state sports council is one of the Oyo State Government Agencies responsible for the development, organization of and participation of sports in the state. Based on the councils responsibility the performance of these 25 sports is hinged on regular participation in age groups and open national championships including the biennial national sports festival. The state however is designated into 5
sporting zones of Ibadan, Oyo, Ogbomoso, Saki and Eruwa with Oyo state council headquarters situated at Lekan Salami Sports Complex Adamasingba, Ibadan. It is pertinent to mention it here that the sports council metamorphosed from the creation of Oyo state from western state in 1976 but still incorporated under Western Region Law No.51 of 1959. It is however, suffice it to say that a law to provide for the establishment of Oyo State Sports Council was enacted on 28th May, 2003 by the former executive governor of Oyo State Alhaji. [Dr] Lamidi Onalapo Adesina. The size of the Oyo State Sports Council covers the whole Oyo State with headquarters in Ibadan. There is a stadium in the five zones of Ibadan. Our Vision
To establish sports as a trademark in Oyo State where its product [athletes] will be hinged on performance that will be satisfactory quality and high marketable value, as well as occupying the youths in more virile, positive and productive direction through career of sporting activities. Our Mission
To develop and promote sports in all its ramifications to optimal and international standard so as to continuously improve the Oyo State athletes and its entire citizenry while showcasing the state as one of the leading sporting states in Nigeria and beyond. Our Objectives:
To encourage the development, organization and participation of sports in the state. To co-ordinate and integrate efforts to raise the standards of performance of sports throughout the state. To maintain all stadium owned or controlled by the state government and make necessary arrangement for competitions, technical and financial assistance and recruitment of coaches. To advise the government generally on the development of sports in the state.
