Established by the Selangor State Government, the Selangor Information Technology and E-Commerce Council (SITEC), under the secretariat of Invest Selangor Berhad, was given the mandate to develop Selangor as the regional trading hub for e-commerce, and to cultivate a startup-friendly environment to spur the growth of local startups. The SITEC council is chaired by Selangor State Senior Executive
Councilor in charge of investments, Dato’ Teng Chang Khim, and the council is tasked with encouraging small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the state to embrace e-commerce, and to widen their market in a borderless world. An initial aim of SITEC is to help 100 Selangor SMEs to go online by providing e-commerce education and training (Selangor E-Commerce Class 100), and helping them to sell on online shopping platforms (Selangor Online 100), and mobile applications (Selangor Apps 100). In addition, SITEC aims to build a “Selangor mobile community” – with a mobile application dedicated to facilitating engagement in our state. Residents and investors can download Selangor Apps to get information easily, quickly and remotely from their mobile devices. SITEC is also developing its Selangor Digital Creative Centre (SDCC), an 11,000 square feet incubator and co-working space that offers synergy of technological innovation and enterprise culture to nurture startups especially SMEs. SDCC is not merely a comfortable workplace, but an environment for collaboration and interaction through a variety of events and programs. Inspired by the rise of startups, more and more young graduates are reassessing their career options and looking for more entrepreneurial career paths. SITEC can play an active role in helping these graduates, by working together with local universities such as the University of Selangor (UNISEL). Dr. Raja Mohamad Taraqi Raja Lope Ahmad, the dean of the Faculty of Computer Science, and Dr.Mohd Fuad Mohd Salleh, the dean of the Faculty of Business, are SITEC council members. SITEC is also establishing its Maker Studio which aims to encourage the “maker movement” in Selangor. SITEC plans to register with the Fab Foundation, a US non-profit organization that emerged from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)’s Center for Bits & Atoms Fab Lab Program.
