10 year old girl defeated GM Smith!
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Keya Jha, a 10-year-old student from Berlin Middle School in Delaware, Ohio, has etched her name in American chess history by becoming the youngest female from the United States to defeat a Grandmaster in a competitive chess match.
At just 10 years, 9 months, and 2 days old, Keya achieved this remarkable milestone during the 5th Annual Joe Yun Memorial Tournament, held in Akron, Ohio.
The tournament was held from August 8th to August 10th, 2025.
She secured victory in the tournament with 4.5 out of 5 possible points, clinching the win against Grandmaster Bryan Smith in the final round.
In an extraordinary twist, Keya also set a world record, becoming the second youngest female globally to defeat a Grandmaster, just hours after the current world record holder accomplished the same feat on the exact same day.
