We’ve documented more than 150 testimonies of assaults suffered by people at the hands of military and national police.

Is it because people crossed irregularly, because they lack a visa, passport, or residency permit? Or does all of this actually have to do with their skin color, their appearance, their religion, their origin, their wallets, their class, their status? Whatever the excuse, it isn’t reason enough.

We witness daily how many officers don’t tell people to step aside or stay in line — they simply hit them with a baton, as if a shepherd were driving his flock with blows; but real shepherds care far more for their animals.

What happens when the cameras aren’t there?

We heard about robberies, intimidation, threats, tents torn apart, people woken at midnight, stones thrown. What will happen next?

Those who are supposed to protect people have stopped protecting them. It’s already happening.

We are circulating the support call for THOSE WHO BURN THE BORDERS, a DIY documentary film developed within Cadre Cagoulé, a rhizomatic guerrilla cinema collective.

The film has been shot since October 2024 between Morocco, Ceuta and Europe. It starts from the trajectories of harragas. Harraga comes from the Arabic word harraq, to burn. In North Africa, the word refers to those who cross borders without authorisation, but also to a gesture of refusal, rupture and revolt against an order that assigns, confines and humiliates.

THOSE WHO BURN THE BORDERS speaks about hogra, repression, exile, racism, police and administrative violence, but also rage, survival, dignity and memory.

The film refuses the dominant narrative that reduces these departures to simple “economic migration”. What many are fleeing is also political, social and colonial violence. A violence that marks bodies, organises precarity, blocks movement, and then criminalises those who move.

It also speaks about white privilege in relation to travel. Some bodies cross with passports, tourist visas, holiday images and freedom of movement. Others are sorted, hunted, detained, pushed back or criminalised. The border does not open for everyone in the same way.

Ceuta is at the heart of the film. A Spanish enclave in North Africa, it makes Europe’s colonial continuity visible. Walls, barbed wire, cameras, police, pushbacks and techniques of control. Ceuta is a place where Europe tests its border violence directly on the African continent.

Our guerrilla cinema is a practice of autonomy. Filming despite censorship. Filming without classical production. Filming with the means available. Producing our own images against state narratives, against dominant media, against erasure.

Today, the film is in post-production. This stage is essential for the film to exist with the quality it deserves and to circulate widely. The support will go toward final editing, sound, colour grading, subtitles, translations, artistic collaborations and the circulation of the film in autonomous, militant, artistic and no borders spaces.

The film will be released in September 2026.

THOSE WHO BURN THE BORDERS is a film that began in October 2024, shot between Morocco, Ceuta and Europe.

A film about the bodies wounded, scattered and threatened with erasure by the border. A film about harragas, hogra, repression, exile, survival, and the political violence that Europe keeps disguising as “economic migration”.

Carried by Cadre Cagoule, a rhizomatic audiovisual guerrilla collective.
