Slum Film Festival

Slum Film Festival We believe that everyone has a story worth telling; and that storytelling can shape perspectives, build understanding, and inspire change.

Slum Film Festival is a storytelling platform empowering young creatives from underserved communities to share authentic stories through film, photography and the arts. Slum Film Festival (SFF) is a storytelling platform dedicated to empowering young creatives from underserved communities to tell authentic, powerful stories through film, media, and the arts. Through our Capacity Building programs,

we provide hands-on training, workshops, masterclasses, and after-school storytelling sessions for young people (Grades 6–12 and beyond). We equip emerging storytellers with practical skills in filmmaking, content creation, and creative expression. Our Advocacy work uses film and visual storytelling as a tool for dialogue and social impact. We curate indoor and outdoor screenings, host conversations and Q&As, and create spaces where communities can engage with stories that reflect their lived realities. We also incorporate exhibitions in photography and visual arts to expand how stories are experienced. At the heart of our work is the Slum Film Festival; our flagship event that celebrates bold, authentic storytelling from the Global South. The festival brings together filmmakers, audiences, and industry players through film screenings, discussions, jury selections, and awards that spotlight emerging and established voices. Based in Nairobi and working with partners locally and globally, SFF continues to nurture talent, amplify underrepresented voices, and build a vibrant storytelling ecosystem. Join us, partner with us, or be part of the stories shaping our world.

📍 Saturday, 2 May | 12 PM
📌 Contemporary Image Centre (CIC), Westlands

This Saturday, we gather to witness something powerful.

Through Our Eyes — a youth-made documentary by Slum Film Festival — will be screened alongside a photo exhibition featuring work by young photographers from Kibera, developed through the Spark Peace Project in collaboration with The Coffee Ministry CFK Africa What's Good Media

Through their own lenses and their own words, these young storytellers share real reflections on peace, identity, belonging, and everyday life in their communities.

This is more than a screening or exhibition — it’s a moment to listen, to see, and to connect.

Something shifted last week.

We walked into Rebirth of a Queen thinking we were coming to run a training.

We left having witnessed growth.

In just 3 days, participants moved from:
📸 learning how to set up a camera
→ to
💡 understanding how to price their work
→ to
🎬 creating and presenting real ideas

But beyond the skills, something deeper happened.

Confidence grew.
Voices opened up.
Possibilities expanded.

One participant said:
“I wasn’t a fan of cameras… but now I want to learn more.”

And that’s what this is about.

Creating space.
Opening doors.
And reminding young people that their stories — and their work — matter.

This is just the beginning.

Day 3 — bringing it all together

Participants stepped into the role of content creators responding to a real client brief.

From concept to story to budget — they built everything.

One group priced at Ksh 93,800.
Another at Ksh 441,500.

Different numbers. Same growth.

What mattered most wasn’t the figures —
it was the thinking behind them.

By this point, they weren’t just learning tools…
they were thinking like creatives.

Day 2 got real.

We moved from learning tools… to understanding value.

Participants were asked to price real jobs:
📍 Weddings
📍 Church services
📍 Event coverage

The responses? Everything from Ksh 1,000 to Ksh 500,000 😄

But that’s where the learning happened.

Through discussion, group work, and role play, they began to understand:
💡 how to break down costs
💡 how to think like professionals
💡 how to see from a client’s perspective

From guessing → to thinking.

That shift is everything.

Day 1 at Rebirth of a Queen

We kicked off our Creative Industry Training with something simple but powerful: understanding the tools.

For many of the participants, this was their first time:
📸 setting up a camera
🎥 mounting it on a tripod
🎤 working with audio equipment

What stood out most wasn’t just learning the equipment…
it was the curiosity, the excitement, and the willingness to try.

Sometimes all it takes is access.

And from there, everything begins.

We’re excited to announce a new partnership between Slum Film Festival and Rebirth of a Queen.

This collaboration is rooted in something we deeply believe in; creating space for young people to express themselves, tell their stories, and grow both creatively and professionally.

We’ll be kicking things off with:
• Creative Industry Training for youth in Kiserian
• Identity Storytelling Workshops with the girls at the Rebirth of a Queen centre

We’re looking forward to building something meaningful together.

This collaboration is rooted in something we deeply believe in: creating space for young people to express themselves, tell their stories, and grow both creatively and professionally.
