It has been a dangerous but well managed last few days. The ice on Mt. Everest is melting which means it is now officially too dangerous to proceed to the summit due to the risk of avalanches. The paths have therefore been shut down for the safety of all. Even with this news, Wambui was able to do one more expedition and went on to summit the Island Peak which sits at 6,160m above sea level. This is definitely not the end of the challenge but simply a 'See You Later Everest'... Equity Bank Kenya

Today Wambui and the team trekked from Dengboche to Lobuche (5030m above sea level). The team will be spending the night at the Meteorological station which is just beyond Lobuche.

HAPPY MADARAKA DAY... Today is also day one of two for acclimatization at Dengboche ( 4410m). Started off with an early morning hike in the surrounding areas. Beautiful weather which we are absolutely thankful to God for as it is monsoon season. You can see the Ama Dablum peak in the background, one of the most spectacular mountains in the world standing at an impressive 6814m.

A scenic trek from Debuche to Dingboche made even more interesting by Wambui's first sighting of the Himalayan Tahr ( a mountain goat ). This is a species that is considered endangered with its population decreasing mainly due to uncontrolled hunting. Being within the Sagarmatha National Park, the species is protected in this environment.

The team will spend 2 nights acclimatizing in Dingboche which is at 4410m .

After a day of acclimatization in Namche, Wambui and the team trekked for approximately 5 hours to the village of Deboche. Deboche sits at 3710m above sea level. From here, the trek is expected to continue tomorrow onward to Dingboche which lies at 4,410m. The team will spend 2 nights in Dingboche acclimatizing.

**Acclimatization is the process in which our body becomes accustomed to lower levels of oxygen in the surrounding air. At the summit of Mt. Everest there is approximately only 33% of the oxygen that is available at sea level... This has been equated to climbing up stairs and only getting 1 out of every 3 breathes. This is why acclimatization is a critical part of mountain climbing.

Today's climb was a 5 hour climb from Toktok which lies at 2800m to Namche which lies at 3405m. With Everest Base Camp approximately 5 days away, we continue to pray for great weather and a safe trek. Thank you all again for your continued support. Let's do this!!

Lukla to Toktok

From Wambui's journal …. 'Today was a scenic walk... It was amazing on 3 fronts a. the scenery b. the clean environment c. the hiking trails.

The scenery - 'I don't think I have seen such contracts of hills and valleys before and at such close proximity. Throw in a raging river, a couple of iron foot bridges, some stairs to take you up those hills.'

The clean environment - ' I have not seen any rubbish to speak of, the walking trails are clean , every little village we passed was clean'.

The hiking trails - ' The trails are well stabilized with local stone. I was informed work was done by government and residents. This is something Mt. Kenya should look at'.

Wambui arrived safely in Kathmandu, Nepal and this morning she proceeded to Lukla from where she will be starting her climb tomorrow. We will keep you all updated as best as possible whenever she is able to communicate. Please keep this expedition in your prayers and best wishes. Equity Bank Kenya

AND SHE's OFF.... The journey finally begins... It has been a long year planning, training and fund raising for this quest. While the target was not realized, it is important that the climb begins as the climbing season nears its close. We're back!!! During the few days of silence, we have been toiling and rallying, friends and well wishers to support this mission.
