On July 12, the closing ceremony was held. The ceremony began with a VTR reviewing the competition. Photos of the opening ceremony, the athletes heading for the contest, and post-competition excursions were projected on a large screen. After Chiba City Mayor Shunichi Kamiya and Professor Takehiko Fujita from Chuo University made their opening remarks, the awards ceremony took place.
First, IMO Committee Chairman Gregor Doliner (Professor at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia) gave his comment. Then, the Honorable Mentions, the award given to the contestants who had received perfect score at least one question were announced. Each of the ten bronze, silver, and gold medal winners received their medals on the stage with their national flags and mascot dolls, to thunderous applause.
After the presentation of the Mirzakhani Award, given to one female athlete from each of the five continents for outstanding performance, the awards ceremony concluded with special recognition for the five perfect score winners. According to Professor Doliner, there was a long discussion that Question 6 might be too difficult. Thus, generous praise was given to the five contestans who gained the perfect scores on the difficult questions.
Lastly, the IMO flag was handed over from the Japanese team to the British team, the host country for next year's event. They presented a humorous VTR introducing British culture and the atmosphere of the host university, the University of Bath, made the audience filled with laughter.
Professor Takehiko Fujita gave the closing remarks and the one and a half hour closing ceremony came to an end.
