SMRITI - An Indian Music & Dance Festival is an initiative by Rhythm Society under the aegis of its artistic director - the world renowned Tabla Maestro and Music Composer, Pandit Udhai Mazumdar. His family has belonged to the world famous tradition of Darbhanga Gharฤna known for Dhrupad & Pakhฤwaj for 350 years and includes the late Pt. Bhim Singh Mallick who was a great Pakhฤwaj player 300 years ago, Pt. Chittapal Mallick (Famous Dhrupad singer in his time), Pt. Rajit Ram Mallick (Great Gฤyak & Nฤyak), Pt. Beni Madhav Mallick (Renowned Dhrupad Vocalist), Padmabhushan Pt. Ram Chatur Mallick, Padmashri Pt. Siyaram Tiwari, Pt. Chandra Kumar Mallick & Pt. Vidur Mallick.

Dhrupad, a style of North Indian classical vocal music that is known for its elaborate alaps, slow melodies, and accelerating rhythms. Dhrupad has its roots in the ancient Sama Vedic literature and the vocal styles of Prabandha and Chhanda. It is the oldest known style of major vocal styles associated with Hindustani classical music.
