How Can This Vulture Eat Bones? 🦅 The Science Is Incredible!
How can a bird swallow and digest large bones that other birds can’t even eat? 🦅💀
Meet the Bearded Vulture — a remarkable bird whose diet is made up largely of bones. Its highly specialized digestive system is adapted to break down bone material, including the minerals locked inside it.
But its survival strategy gets even more fascinating. When a bone is too large to swallow, the Bearded Vulture carries it high into the air, drops it onto rocks to break it into smaller pieces, and then returns to consume the fragments. It can even repeatedly use preferred rock sites for this remarkable feeding technique.
And there’s another mystery: its naturally pale plumage can become orange-red after deliberately bathing in iron-oxide-rich soil, a behavior scientists believe may play a role in social signaling.
