Sumit elected president Tawi Trekkers

JAMMU, Dec 25: Sumit Khajuria, a highly trained and experienced mountaineer, a skier, a rafter, a scuba diver and a sport climbing judge was unanimously elected as president of Tawi Trekkers J&K in an election meeting held at Press Club of Jammu. Whereas Sonam Sidharth has retained as general secretary, Shawetica Khajuria was unanimously elected as the working president of the Club.

Belonging to the second generation of Tawi Trekkers J&K, Sumit Khajuria, a silent and very efficient organiser, has led many successful mountaineering expeditions and has contributed substantially for the grand success of Himalayan Trekking Programmes and various other adventure activities organised by Tawi Trekkers J&K.

Earlier, the Club welcomed its chairman, Anil Goswami, a former Union Home Secretary, co-chairman, Zorawar Singh Jamwal, vice president Press Club of Jammu; patrons, Ashwani Sharma, former MLA; Rahul Sharma, chairman, Sprawling Buds ICSE School and advisor of the Club, Ram Khajuria.

Elections to the other office bearers and executive members were also conducted by Ram Khajuria, a founder member, in the presence of an observer from Mountaineering Association of J&K, Rakesh Goswami, an executive member of the Association.

Whereas Arti Sharma was re-elected as senior vice president, Mridhu Padha was elected as vice president. Shashi Kant Sharma was elected as joint secretary and Sushil Singh as treasurer of the Club.

Pioneer sport climber of J&K, Shobha Rajput of Samba and senior members, Navneet Gupta, Sunil Chakharia of Bishnah, Binder Pal Singh, Ananjan Raghav Khajuria and Rakesh Goswami were made executive members.

Before the elections, in a meeting of the veteran members of the club, the members expressed satisfaction about the performance and achievements of the Club. They felt pride in the fact that the club has produced so many national champions and international sport climbers besides a number of brilliant mountaineers who have scaled formidable peaks including Everest, Kangchenjunga, Manaslu, Shivling and Mount Vinson in Antarctica.

In the end Sumit Khajuria, President of the club thanked the members for reposing so much faith in him and promised to work with full dedication to take the Club to new heights.

Tawi Trekkers felicitates Mountaineer Rajesh Mukhi

JAMMU, Dec 03: Tawi Trekkers J&K felicitated Rajesh Mukhi, a senior and accomplished member of the Club, for his recent achievement of scaling the 6119m high Mount Labuche in the Everest region of Nepal, where he proudly unfurled the flag of Tawi Trekkers J&K.

He was accompanied by his two daughters, Aadhya (seven years) and Aaradhya (14 years), who will join him in March 2026 for an expedition to the Everest region.

While Rajesh Mukhi has planned to attempt Ama Dablam, one of the most technically challenging peaks in the Himalaya, his daughters will trek to the Everest Base Camp. Additionally, his elder daughter Aaradhya will trek further up to Camp 1 of Ama Dablam, marking an extraordinary feat for a young trekker.

It is noteworthy that Rajesh Mukhi has earlier summitted Mount Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica, in 2017, where he also unfurled the Club’s flag.

In 2022, he completed an exceptional spiritual and endurance journey by trekking to all five Holy Kailash peaks—Kailash Mansarovar in Tibet, Adi Kailash in Uttarakhand, Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash, Manimahesh Kailash and Kinnaur Kailash in Himachal Pradesh.

In June 2023, he trekked to the Everest Base Camp and then successfully summitted the 6165m high Island Peak in the Everest region.

His consistent visits to the region over the last three years form a crucial part of his preparation for a planned Mount Everest summit attempt in 2027.

Prominent dignitaries who felicitated and extended their best wishes to Rajesh Mukhi and his daughters included Anil Goswami, Chairman of the Club and former Union Home Secretary; patrons Ashwani Sharma, former MLA, and Rahul Sharma, Chairman of Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Jammu; along with the president and working president of the club, Sumit Khajuria and Shawetica Khajuria respectively. Senior members Amit Khajuria, Sunil Chakharia, and Ajay Thappa were also present.

Tawi Trekkers start winter activities from Nov 15

JAMMU, Nov 04: In keeping with its policy of promoting heritage sites and lesser frequented beauty spots of Jammu through a series of short treks, Tawi Trekkers J&K, the pioneer trekking club of Jammu, shall start its winter activities with a soft adventure picnic in the Mansar-Mohoregarh area.

The first batch of about 135 students shall undertake this picnic trek on November 15 which shall be followed by many other groups on subsequent days. The target for participation in the one-day soft adventure picnics during the winter season has been fixed at 2000 which the club hopes to achieve by the end of December this year. However, this activity shall continue to the end of February, 2025.

Whereas Shashi Kant, a trained mountaineer shall be the leader of the first group, Sonam Sidharth, Sumit Khajuria, Sushil Singh, and Shilpa Charak shall be among the leaders of the other groups. Every group shall be escorted by at least two other activists of the club.

It is pertinent to mention here that Tawi Trekkers J&K has been exploring the possibilities of linking Purmandal, Mohoregarh, Bhupnergarh, Dhergarh, Mansar, Surinsar and Pahair Devta for creating an adventure and heritage cm pilgrim circuit. Accordingly, the club has been regularly conducting reconnaissance of these areas for making them a winter hub of soft adventure activities like adventure camps/ picnics and short heritage treks.

The efforts of the club have already started bearing fruits as during the last four years about 4000 boys and girls have participated in the one-day treks organized by the club from Mohore Garh to Mansar; Dher Garh to Mansar; Bhupnergarh to Mansar; from Kattal Batal to Aitham via Bhed Devta and to Devi Pindian near Panthal in Reasi District.

Tawi Trekkers honours Mohit on 43rd Anniversary

JAMMU, Nov 03: Tawi Trekkers J&K celebrated its 43rd Anniversary and Prize Distribution Function amidst felicitation of mountaineers, sport climbers, adventure-promoting institutions, and prominent members of the Club, here.

Former Chief Secretary, BR Sharma was the chief guest while Anil Goswami, former Home Secretary of India and patron of the Club, presided. Rahul Sharma, Chairman, Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Jammu; and Padma Shri Prof. Lalit Magotra, president, Dogri Sanstha Jammu were among the special guests.

The main attraction of the event was Mohit Knathia, the youngest Everester from J&K, who was presented the ‘Duggar Gaurav Adventure Award’, the highest honour of the Club, for his outstanding achievement of scaling Mount Everest on May 18, 2025 at the age of only 18 years. He was presented a cash prize of Rs 21,000 besides citation.

Subedar Major Balkar Singh, already a recipient of the Duggar Gaurav Adventure Award for his Everest climb in 2016, was conferred with the title of ‘Most Outstanding Mountaineer of J&K’ for scaling Everest for the second time, also on May 18, 2025.

Another highlight of the function was Sushil Singh, a seasoned and dedicated trekker and organiser, who was honoured with the ‘Narinder Singh Slathia Dedication Award’ for his selfless service, loyalty, and passion for the Club. Everesters Ram Singh Slathia and Falail Singh were also honoured on the occasion, along with Wing Commander Rajesh Mukhi, who successfully scaled Mount Lobuche in the Everest region in October this year.

Among the institutions, Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Bantalab; MHAC School, Nagbani; and A***n Oriental Convent Higher Secondary School, Udhampur were honoured for their outstanding contribution to the cause of Adventure.

Other institutions including Oriental Academy Senior Secondary School, Jammu; St. Xavier Senior Secondary School, Barnai;

GCW Gandhi Nagar; JK Montessorie School; Shiksha Niketan Group of Schools; and Euro Kids, Samba were awarded for their enthusiastic participation.

Teachers and young members of the club who accompanied trekking groups and supported sport climbing competitions were also felicitated for their contributions.

Prominent among those present were Advisors of the Club, Ram Khajuria and Vivek Chauhan; Parveen Sharma, chairman, The Citizens’ Cooperative Bank Ltd.; president and working president, Sumit Khajuria and Shawetica Khajuria; vice presidents Mridhu Padha and Seema Kharyal and general secretary, Sonam Sidharth.

The special guests included Dr. Javaid Rahi, Verinder Slathia, Prof. CK Khajuria, Dr. Mritunjay Gupta, Amit Sharma, Wildlife Warden (Research), Jammu; Shiv Kumar Sharma, patron District Mountaineering Association, Reasi; Ulfat Khan, president, Students’ Council, GCW Parade; and Upkar Singh Jamwal, chairman, A***n Oriental School, Udhampur.

Earlier, Sonam Sidharth, general secretary of the Club, delivered the welcome address, recalling the 43-year journey of the Club and highlighting its significant achievements during the current year. Addressing the gathering, the chief guest, BR Sharma, emphasized

the importance of enjoying and preserving nature while pursuing adventure sports. He lauded the efforts of Tawi Trekkers J&K for promoting adventure activities and nurturing national and international level sport climbers and mountaineers despite infrastructural and financial challenges.

The event was anchored by Arti Sharma, senior vice president, and Sanjeevani Bhardwaj, executive member of the Club.

Tawi Trekkers completes its first phase of events

JAMMU, July 03: The first phase of Himalayan Trekking Programme, organised by Tawi Trekkers J&K, one of the leading trekking clubs in the country, concluded as the last group of trekkers returned here after a successful trekking venture in the Mcleodganj area of Himachal Pradesh.

Altogether, around 500 students, mainly from MHAC School, Nagbani, A***n Oriental Convent School, Udhampur, St Xavier Convent Senior Secondary School, Barnai and JK Montessori School, Talab Tilloo, Jammu participated in the initiative aimed at nurturing a spirit of adventure, environment awareness and physical fitness among youth.

The budding trekkers explored scenic routes, heritage and spiritual places including Bhagshu to Dharmakot to Gallu temple trek, Dal Lake, Dalai Lama temple complex, tea estate and a tea manufacturing company. In addition to adventure activities students engaged in group games, nature study and reflection activities that promoted team work and self confidence.

The programme was designed to help students break free from the digital distractions of urban life while fostering qualities like discipline, endurance and a love for nature.

The first group of 90 students was flagged off from Kala Kendra, Jammu on 10 th June, 2025 by an eminent personality Anil Goswami, former Home Secretary of India and Chairman of Tawi Trekkers. From Kala Kendra,Jammu.

“We believe that exposure to nature at a young age fosters a life-long respect for environment and builds character”, said Sonam Sidharth, general secretary of Tawi Trekkers J&K and field director of the programme.

“Through such programmes, we aim to catch them young and introduce them to the spirit of adventure and self discovery”, Anika Khajuria,a student participant, shared. The programme was organised in cooperation with J&K Sports Council, Mountaineering Association of J&K, Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Jammu and Adventure Holidays India.

The second phase of the programme called Himalayan Heritage Trekking Programme shall be conducted post monsoon season.

Third batch of Tawi Trekkers leave for HP

JAMMU, June 13: The third batch of Tawi Trekkers J&K, comprising 90 students, including 32 girls, of MHAC School, Nagbani, here left today for Dharamshala to participate in the Dharamshala Himalayan Trekking Programme being organized by Tawi Trekkers under the overall supervision of Shawetica Khajuria, president of the club.

Shashi Kant Sharma, a trained mountaineer and a seasoned trekker along with Hari Khajuria and four teachers of the school Sanjay Nayar, Anuradha Sharma and Sarika Billowria escorted the group.

Meanwhile, activists of the club led by Sonam Sidharth, Field Director of the programme, Sourav Deep Singh and others have already made proper boarding, lodging and other necessary arrangements at Chamunda and Macleodganj area for the smooth conduct of the trekking venture.

Earlier, the group was flagged off by Parveen Sharma, Chairman of The Citizens’ Co-operative Bank Ltd, Jammu; Rahul Sharma, Patron of the club and Sonia Anand Principal of MHAC Scool, Nagbani. Interacting with the students, the chief guest advised them to respect and love nature by keeping the camp site as well as the trekking trail neat and clean.

The programme is being organized in cooperation with J&K Sports Council, Mountaineering Association of J&K, Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Bantalab, Jammu, Adventure Holidays India, Jammu and Northernland Hikes, Jammu.

Meanwhile, the 1st group of trekkers of MHAC School, Nagbani School, Jammu has reached back Jammu after a memorial experience of trekking in the calm and cool forests of Mcleodganj area. The next group of about 150 trekkers shall leave on June 16.

It may be mentioned that Tawi Trekkers J&K is a voluntary, non profit making, social service and sports organisation run by a group of highly dedicated young boys and girls whose only motive is to spread spirit of adventure and love of nature among all strata of society without distinction of colour, caste and creed.
