We are deeply disturbed by the unfortunate incident involving one of the artists Kendy Heigrujam associated with our festival. We strongly condemn this act of violence and express our heartfelt concern for the safety and well-being of artists in our state.

We would like to note that the incident occurred after his performance, when a group of six to seven individuals, who pretended to be fans, approached the artist requesting to take a picture with him. Instead, they went on to physically attack him, and immediately fled the scene. The Dirty Strikes has been an integral part of the Imphal Indie Music Festival, having performed in both our editions. They are valued members of our festival family, making this incident especially painful and unacceptable.

At this stage, we urge everyone not to make assumptions or engage in speculation. The matter is being treated with utmost seriousness, and appropriate legal proceedings will take place.

Last night was a horrible experience. Our vocalist, Kendy, was attacked by a group of miscreants (around 6–7 people with their faces covered) in what appeared to be an attempted murder. They used knives or sharp tools and targeted his head and face. The incident happened after our show at the Imphal Indie Festival – 2nd Edition, held at Wahyum Eco Resort, Taorem. Kendy and Kennyson Laitonjam had stepped out from the green room to receive some friends. At that moment, a few people approached them requesting to take photos. Suddenly, they attacked Kendy’s head and face. Kennyson tried to defend him but could not handle the situation alone. Kennyson shouted loudly for help, after which the attackers fled the scene quickly. The incident was clearly well planned. Many people were present around the festival entrance area and witnessed what happened. Several people ran after the attackers, but they managed to escape.

This raises serious questions:
Why are such acts being committed against artists?
Who are these people?
Is this driven by jealousy?
Or is it because we sing songs that speak about political failures and systemic issues?

What does this mean for the future of our society?
For our youth?
For artistic freedom?

Or is there a group of people who want to rule through fear, violence, and suppression, silencing voices that dare to speak the truth?
