The inclusion of Nepali in the 8th Schedule was not just a political act; it was a victory for our history, a promise to our children, and a true celebration of unity in diversity.
○​1956: Anand Singh Thapa (editor of Jagrat Gorkha, Dehradun) along with Bir Singh Bhandari and Narendra Singh Rana submitted the first official memorandum to President Dr. Rajendra Prasad requesting recognition under Clause 347.
○​1961: The West Bengal Official Language Act recognized Nepali as an official language in the hill sub-divisions of Darjeeling district.
○​1971: Ratanlal Brahman ("Maila Baje") created history by insisting on speaking in Nepali inside the Lok Sabha, bringing national attention to the demand.
○​1976: The Sahitya Akademi officially recognized Nepali as an Indian literary language.
○​1977–1992: Massive mass movements and organizational unification under the Akhil Bharatiya Nepali Bhasa Samiti mobilized support across Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam, and the North East. MP Dil Kumari Bhandari introduced the bill in Parliament.
○​August 20, 1992: Parliament passed the 71st Constitutional Amendment Act, officially including Nepali, Manipuri, and Konkani in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
