From 1935 until 2000, any Irish venue seeking a late-night alcohol licence was required to serve a “substantial meal.”

By law, nightclubs were obliged to halt the music, switch on the lights, and serve food during operating hours.

What emerged from this legal formality, however, became yet another quirky chapter in Irish nightlife: mid‑party, DJs and bands would pause the music while plates of chicken curry or chicken nuggets and chips were passed around.
