- the airport up at Knock ✈️🎶

Today marks an incredible milestone 🙌 — 40 years of Ireland West Airport. From the very beginning, the airport and Knock village have shared a story unlike anywhere else in Ireland. 🫶 We'd love to hear your memories! 💭

Long before the first passengers arrived, locals watched the runways being carved into the Mayo landscape 🚜. Families in Knock and the surrounding areas remember the trucks 🚛, the workers 🛠, the excitement 🤗, the scepticism 😬… and the hope ☺️🥰.

Many people from the village helped build it, worked there over the years, welcomed visitors through its doors, or made lifelong careers from what started as Monsignor Horan’s ambitious dream 🙏 — a vision that brought opportunity, connection and pride to Knock, and one that generations of local families will always be grateful for 💫.

For villages like Knock, the airport changed everything. It brought the world closer to our doorstep 🌍🗺. Pilgrims, tourists, returning emigrants, holidaymakers and workers all passed through — and many found their way into Carty's Bar & Lounge - Knock for a warm welcome, a pint, a bit of craic and a story along the way. 🍻🥰

Over four decades, we’ve seen friendships formed at the counter after flights home from London, reunions before departures to America, celebrations after safe arrivals, and the odd holiday too - whether for sunshine, skiing, golfing, weddings, hens and stags... they often started or finished (or both!) in Carty’s ✈️🥳🥂🍻.

Today, Ireland West Airport remains a huge part of life here in Knock, supporting local businesses, jobs, tourism and community spirit. We’re proud to have grown alongside it and Knock Shrine ⛪️.

So for this , we’d love to hear your memories:
✈️ Do you remember when the airport was being built?
✈️ Were you there for the opening days?
✈️ Did you work there — or still commute through it today?
✈️ Have you welcomed loved ones home through Knock Airport over the years?

Share your stories, photos and memories in the comments below 👇

And from all of us at Carty’s Bar — congratulations and happy 40th anniversary to Ireland West Airport Knock! 🥂

🕰️🎶🍻 - "Captured by Song"

An ordinary evening in Carty’s pub in November 1983… that became part of Ireland’s folklore history ❤️

This Mayo News article from 4th September 2012 📰 features a beautiful photograph of two much-loved local musicians and characters — Tom Beirne, known to most as Tom P, alongside Bill Murphy, better remembered as Uncle Bill — playing tin whistles by the fire in Carty’s over 40 years ago 🔥🪈🍺

(We’ll forgive the article for calling us as “McCarthy’s” 😂)

For locals, both men will be fondly remembered. Tom P on his “high nelly” 🚲, always ready for a tune or a chat, and Uncle Bill 👞, the skilled cobbler whose music and company were part of everyday parish life ☺️

The photograph 📷 was taken by renowned folklorist and song collector Tom Munnelly during one of his collecting journeys through rural Ireland 📝🎥📼 Munnelly spent decades travelling the country preserving songs, stories, music and traditions that might otherwise have been lost 🎻

According to his own account, he had simply stopped into Carty’s to warm himself by the fire 🔥 when Tom P and Uncle Bill arrived with their whistles and the music (and magic) began 🪈🎵💫

Local musicians playing tunes the way they had always been played in rural Irish pubs ❤️ At the time, it probably felt like just another evening in Knock. Today, we know it was something far more special ✨

That moment — the music, the friendship, the atmosphere of a rural Mayo pub — is now preserved as part of Ireland’s National Folklore Collection in UCD, where the photograph features in the “Captured by Song” exhibition celebrating Tom Munnelly’s extraordinary work 🏫

The last 2 pictures we've featured before in our Throwback Thursdays 👀 of Bill Murphy and Tom P - remember?

A reminder that ordinary local life mattered ❤️ The music by the fire 🎵 The bicycles outside the door 🚲 The stories over a pint 🍺 The tunes carrying late into the night 🌙

To learn more about Tom Munnelly and his work, TG4 recently aired a documentary about him - see link in comments 🔗

There are moments that stop a community in its tracks, and last weekend was one of them 💔

We are heartbroken at the passing of Barry Byrne RIP🕯

Barry meant so much to so many. To us, he was one of our very best friends. Loyal, kind, full of character and always great company, his presence lit up the bar and his friendship meant the world to us. He will be missed more than words can say. 😢

While there is no easing the heartbreak of losing someone so loved, there is some small consolation in seeing the incredible send-off Barry received — a reflection of the huge impact he had on people’s lives and how deeply he was loved by all who knew him. ❤️

Our hearts are with Ais, Fíanna and Séan, the Byrne and Lyons families, his wide circle of friends, and everyone who loved him so dearly — including Willow and Ted 🐾

And from all the stories shared over the past few days, and the amazing rendition of “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’”, it only feels right to say - thank you Barry... for the laughs, the memories, the friendship and the countless good times shared. Carty’s (and Knock) will never quite be the same without you. 💔

🍂✨ - copper measuring jugs ✨🍂

Following on from last week’s post about the old whiskey flagons 🥃, this week we’re shining a light on the beautiful set of Victorian copper measuring jugs in Carty's ⚖️🏺

The largest jug sits proudly in the Front Bar 🍻, while the other three rest on the shelf above the Lounge doors leading out to the dart boards 🎯 and pool table 🎱 — easy to miss unless you stop for a moment and look up 👀✨

Long before modern taps 🍺 and branded pint glasses 🍺 - ale, porter, cider and whiskey 🥃 were measured and poured from copper vessels just like these 🫗

Stamped “Imperial Half Gallon” ⚖️, they date back to a time when every publican was expected to pour an honest measure 🤝, with official verification marks stamped into the copper as a guarantee of fairness ✔️

These old “haystack measures" were worked hard behind the bar over the years 🍻, particularly when locals gathered in Carty's after long days in the fields 🌾🚜...

Picture it... 🔥 turf fires glowing, 🎻 music in the corner, 🃏 cards on the table, 🍺 pints being poured, 😂 laughter echoing through the bar and 📖 someone beginning a story with…“did I ever tell you about the night…”

Every dent, repair and mark in the copper of these jugs tells its own story 🧡⏳ — not made to decorate a wall, but made to be used, carried, filled and shared 🍻

And maybe that’s why they still look so at home here in Carty’s Bar ❤️ Because it's not just a place for drink 🍺... it's a meeting house 🤝, storyteller’s stage 🎭, music venue 🎶, local newsroom 🗞️ and a place where strangers rarely stay strangers for long ☺️

So next time you’re in for a pint 🍺, take a look toward the old copper jugs 👀✨... they’ve seen generations come and go 🕰️ and if they could talk, there’d be some mighty stories told 🍻✨
