Ellistown faced a stern test of their championship credentials against a very experienced and strong Rathcoffey side in the quarter final of the Junior B Championship.

Ellistown were quick out of the block as straight from the throw in Caoimhe Whiteley found Amy Neilson who carved open the Rathcoffey defence finishing low and hard to put Ellistown a goal to the good. Ellistown won the resulting kickout and Molly Noons raised a white flag to increase their lead.

To their credit Rathcoffey immediately replied with a goal of their own. Things settled down a bit after that but it was a highly entertaining championship battle. The sides went in Level at 2-3 to 1-6 at half time. With the ever dependent Ciara Morrissey adding 1-2 from a penalty and 2 frees with here cultured left boot.

It was tough second half with Rathcoffey putting constant pressure looking to get the win. But with Fiadh Whiteley putting in a top quality display and being like a brick wall in goals with nothin getting past and Sarah Boyce Donohoe marshaling the ever dangerous Hollie Tyrell the found scores hard to come by. It was a backs to the wall display with some impressive defending with Abi Sourke turning over Rathcoffey 5 times in the second half alone in an all action display.

Ellistown caught Rathcoffey on the counter late in the game with Amy Neilson found over the top in space and she duly lobbed the on rushing keeper to raise her second green flag of the game and put Ellistown up by 3 late on. They looked to have the game won but the drama wasn’t over yet with seconds left Caoimhe Whiteley dragged a Rathcoffey player down to win a penalty. The Rathcoffey keeper hit the resulting penalty wide of the post and the final whistle was blown. Ellistown can now look forward to a Championship semi final away to Castlemitchell next tuesday night.

This young side has now proven that they can mix it with the best and will be a team to be feared for the rest of the championship💪🏻
