DESERT FLOWER

Fractal Space: The basic spatial unit of our framework is best defined simply as an area enclosed by a notional boundary. This unit can be further articulated by allowing for a particular orientation, or axis, being determined by a preferred line of approach & point of entry. (Fig. i - Primary Unit). An arrangement of four such units around a shared central zone can then be seen to generate a series of pathways, each leading from the centre of the grouping to the exterior via a gateway zone. This whole may then in turn be enclosed within a new enlarged boundary. (Fig. ii to viii - Level 1 Cell). By applying these same principles of expansion to each new Cell as it emerges, we can generate an ever larger and more complex spatial framework; a Fractal Matrix which is capable of accommodating open ended expansion, whilst preserving local connections across all levels of its spatial hierarchy. (Fig ix and x - Level 2 & Level 3 Cells).

Form & Function: PRIMARY CELLS | (Fig. i): Primary cells are the basic unit within our spatial matrix, each comprising simply of a designated area for shelter of any nature. CENTRES | (Fig. ii): By providing a structured network of shared spaces the Fractal Matrix encourages connections to be formed between individuals and groups within the encampment. Furthermore, by locating shared community facilities within these areas resources can be shared and services provided in a clear and efficient way. GATEWAYS | (Fig. iii) Due to their peripheral position along the primary circulation axis of each cell, these Gateways provide an ideal location for the accommodation of workshop activity. By providing dedicated spaces for the exploration of artistic and spiritual process we can support the creative life of the community. FREE AREA | (Fig. iv) As growth occurs, these zones merge to form an interconnected web of spaces which permeates all levels of the Fractal Matrix. An arena for the imagination, where the unknown can manifest and all things change.

Connection & Flow: PATHWAYS: As the Fractal Matrix expands a clear hierarchy of pathways emerges; comprising a series of overlapping networks, each of which penetrates to a specific level of our spatial framework. (Ref. Fig i to iv). By allocating an appropriate level of circulatory infrastructure to each level of this pathway hierarchy, we can ensure the efficient distribution of pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular routes across all areas of the settlement. INTERCHANGES: Circulation nodes occur at the junctions between different levels of our pathway hierarchy, and coincide with both the Centre and Gateway zones of our spatial framework. By locating interchanges at these nodal points which allow the free flow of traffic between different levels of the circulation network, the Fractal Matrix can facilitate the efficient movement of people and materials across the site. TERMINALS: Central Zones can also provide a suitable location for vehicular transport terminals, facilitating access to the shared community facilities and resources available at centre’s as outlined above.
