“PAST PERFORMANCE IS NOT A GUARANTEE OF FUTURE RESULTS" I heard one teammate warn another on the startline of The John Shanahan Team Time Trial yesterday. But perform they did, as did another 35 teams, including 6 para-tandem teams and 2 hand-cyclists competing in Round 1 of the Para-Cycling National League.
The ‘JSTTT’, hosted by Midleton Cycling & Triathlon Club, remembers our clubmate John Shanahan, who was also a tandem rider, and was sadly taken far too soon. Many members of the community of Midleton will remember John for his fundraising skills with the Guide Dogs.
The club would like to thank the community of Midleton also for their forbearance and cooperation with An Garda Síochána and marshals on the 28.5km course from the bottom of Kathleen Doyle’s Hill to Dungourney, where the riders turn left for more elevation and pain to Castleyons Cross after which they zoom Midleton bound to a finish line near the top of Ballyedmond Hill. Thanks to Cork County Council the roads were tip top. I suppose we should thank the tip-top riders for their forbearance and patience with all the hills too!!
Without the help of the Gardáí, marshals, registration crew, bakers and bottlewashers, photographers and Cycling Ireland Commissarres this event would simply not happen. It’s a testament to our club and community that we had 1 one volunteer for every 2 riders. Those rider have expressed their thanks after a joyous celebration of cycling in ‘My Place’ , another fantastic resource.
Every event needs resources, and without our sponsors where would we be? Our long standing time-bonus partner Roca Sports Ireland have been there from the start. The scratch men & women's prizes were jointly sponsored by ACS Air Conditioning Systems with Mitsubishi Electric and Fridge Spares Wholesale. Aereco Limited sponsored the paracycling races. Other sponsors continue to support us in the background, acknowledging the cyclist's achievements in their own way.
Let talk about those achievements. The JSTTT has numerous categories, and even races within races. In fact, no sooner was the race over, but we heard from Cal Tutty to ask if his record with David Gaffney had survived, to his relief it had, but not so the women’s record. So let’s begin with the winners of the scratch women from Cork County Cycling Club and honour their new course record.
