🏅 Cork City Marathon 2026 Race Report 🏅

What a day for our Cranky Coach athletes at the Cork City Marathon!

With a challenging course, plenty of hills, and warm, humid conditions, it was never going to be easy. Despite that, our athletes delivered some outstanding performances, including PBs, marathon debuts, age-category prizes, and incredible displays of determination.

🔥 Performance of the Day – Barry Twohig 🔥

A huge congratulations to Barry, who broke the 2:30 barrier for the first time, running an outstanding 2:29 to finish 8th overall. A massive PB and a reward for months of hard work and consistency.

🏃 Marathon Results:
• Nathan Ryan O’Hehir – 2:39 (2nd O35)
• Andy Goulding – 2:48
• Jim O’Brien – 3:03 (3rd Age Category)
• Rory Magorrien – 3:10
• Barry McQueen – 3:12
• Cora Lynch – 3:43 (Marathon Debut)
• Rebecca Leane – 3:56 (Marathon Debut)
• Una Duffy – 4:08
• Lia Ryane – 4:09 (Marathon Debut)

👏 Special mention to Mark Murphy for an excellent pacing job throughout the day.

💙 And to Ben, who unfortunately had to pull out with a hamstring injury after a brilliant training block. Your day will come.

We’re incredibly proud of every athlete who toed the line. Whether it was a PB, a debut marathon, overcoming setbacks, or simply getting to the finish line on a tough day, every performance reflected the commitment and spirit of this group.

💙💛 Well done everyone — enjoy the recovery! 💙💛

Race report for the Fota 5 km by Colin Healy

I love doing the cheetah 5k, it’s such a unique race to run through a zoo.
my recent training has been all over the place with my first child arriving only 10 days ago, so sleep and running took a backseat.
I managed to get out and race in ringaskiddy on the Wednesday and in fota last night so I’ve been lucky.
My aim was to be consistent through all km splits ( but as we all know we go faster on the first)
onto the race - it is quite up and down for a 5k with turns and twists. I went out fast and aimed to hold on and hope Conor Friel wouldn’t pass me 😆 .
I stayed on for the first 2.5km and then started picking people off in front of me one by one. this made me feel great as I was eyed up over each shoulder.
the last km was really tough with that big incline before the last 500m stretch to the finish line.
i felt like death crossing the line but happy to see my fastest time in 2 years!!

Midleton 5 Mile race report by Aileen O’Mahony

First mile was quick —mgot a bit sucked in by the crowd and the pace from the gun. Miles 2 to 4 were hard work, with the rolling hills making it tough and trying to hold pace throughout. Final mile felt nice heading for home, although the legs were definitely feeling it by then.

A very enjoyable night overall, and delighted to come away with 3rd in my O40 category.

That’s my 4th race in 4 weeks, so I’m especially happy to get through the block injury free, with a few prizes picked up along the way.

All roads lead to the Cork Half Marathon now!

Race Report by Cloidhan Ui Ruadhain

Despite the weather during this training block, things actually went really well although I genuinely hadn’t a clue what pace I was capable of because every long run seemed to be into wind 🌬️😂

The week before the marathon my legs felt awful and the marathon nerves were in full swing 😅 Kieran’s advice was simple: stick with the 3:15 pacer and race from 20 miles if feeling good. I behaved… for a while anyway 👀

Stayed with the pacers early on but around halfway I slowly drifted off the front and just kept rolling. Felt strong until around mile 21 when the course got very quiet and lonely. Mentally you really had to stay switched on there.

Miles 23–25 around the Gaelic Grounds were ROUGH 😵‍💫 but thankfully the crowds kept roaring “it’s all downhill from mile 25!” and thank God they were right 🙌

Absolutely delighted to finish in 3:13:26 ⏱️
✨ 5-minute PB
🥇 Age Category Winner
🔥 8th Female Overall

Limerick Marathon isn’t an easy course — loads of drags and lonely stretches — but the city centre support was unreal ❤️

Massive thanks to Kieran for another brilliant training block and to all the group for the support. Seeing everyone work hard and hit PBs genuinely drives you on too 🫶
