Our SINGGAH bench forms a warm, welcoming spot at the entrance of power couple and ’s home.

Designed by , the house responds beautifully to the tropical climate. High ceilings, connecting corridors and a wide window-front facing the garden flood the interior with light and a fresh breeze.

| CREATIVE CLUSTERS

Our area of passion is the region in the south of Central-Java around the sultanate cities Yogyakarta and Surakarta. Historically many fine arts and crafts gathered around the two main Mataram palaces to serve to their representative and entertainment needs.

Today, the region is blessed with dozens of clusters located in the surrounding villages that specialize in specific crafts since centuries. It is an endless pool of amazing skills and sources of inspiration that we dream of gradually incorporating into our designs.

In the past 5 years we started to map the crafts surrounding Jogja. It is an ongoing process and by far not all has been covered yet, especiall when we continue to look at the greater Soloraya area.

The “Rumah Beranda” residence in Cirebon, West-Java, has been designed by architect .

Responding to the lively character of the land, Yodi created a Z-shaped layout of the building. This unique arrangement allows for intimately separated rooms, while granting strong exposure to the surrounding landscapes.

The individual areas are connected by verandas that are shaded with widely overarching roofs. This creates a refreshing natural ventilation and provides cozy places to enjoy the morning and late afternoon light.

Our Amben daybed – designed by Eko Prawoto - complements the relaxing experience by transporting the feeling of a slow moment in the countryside to urban living. While our Nagan counter stools of have your back during good meals in the kitchen.

The Raaga House in South Tangerang, Jakarta, was designed by as Yoga’s personal home. is a key figure in the Bintaro design scene and a long-time collaborator of Santai Furniture.

Yoga had owned our Sareng bench and Andhap chairs for years. Upon adding the Deprok easy chair and Kidul chairs from , he asked us to refurbish the older furniture so they blend in perfectly with the new items.

The living room can be fully opened, creating a continuous flow between inside and outside. A role model for tropical living.

Yogyakarta Kraton dancer (Leiden University Library KITLV).

Slow movements, low to the floor, curved hand gesture, humble grace - All elements of Javanese high culture that inspire us and sooner or later can find their way into our design process.

We believe that for a contemporary Javanese design, one has to reconnect and continue what has been locally grown for centuries.

At Santai, we direct our focus to materials, skills and form language that can only be found in Java. We base our designs on the historically given and make incremental steps.

Santai furniture at in .official’s marketing gallery.

Designed by , the space features high ceilings, abundant natural light and generous rooms surrounded with greenery. A garden grows in the center, bringing nature indoors. Calm water bodies add to the serene atmosphere, a signature element of Andra Matin’s architecture.

The café is furnished with pieces from Santai and , all chosen in their most natural variations of teak, rattan weavings and bamboo.

The AGENG table’s design takes inspiration from the radii of the letters in the Javanese ‘Hanacaraka’ script.

Crafted entirely from solid wood, it offers a calming surface and durability that lasts for generations.

The Halo House by TAMARA WIBOWO ARCHITECTS.

The private residence takes form of a contemporary barn, linked by a platform with circular ‘halos’ that define key spaces and bring in shifting light.

The project was nominated by for Building of the Year.

The dining area is composed of our AGENG table, in a customized 2,9 meter version, alongside the Grand Prix chair from .

embrace sustainability and blur the line between in- and outdoors with ideal natural lighting and airflow.

After completing her master’s and working in Minnesota, returned to Semarang in 2015. It was soon after that our paths crossed and a lasting collaboration began.
