On the Way to the Front brings together artists from Asian People's Theatre F
estival Society (Hong Kong) and Théâtre de l'Ordinaire (France), presenting an innovative Mask Theatre performance, fusing live music, movement, juggling and stories between the East and West, then and now, to reveal the political, tragic and sentimental histories that made up the grand History. The production re-creates the life and times of the Chinese Labour Corps, the 140,000 workers recruited by the French and British Armies to the Western Front of First World War. They worked under extreme conditions, killed by bombs and air raids and oppressed by military officers. At the embarrassing situation of meeting of cultures, what happened to the Chinese workers, who had never travelled before, when they arrived at the countryside of France, with radical cultural differences between them and the locals? Being a creative commemoration at the centenary of First World War, this artistic exchange, tours from North of France to Hong Kong and China. Creating a fantastic and non-realistic universe, this highly musical and visual show is bringing you to a world of poetry and humour, exploring the hope of a solidarity world. Théâtre de l'Ordinaire, a French professional Mask Theatre group based in Lille, North of France, has been performing in theatres, communities and villages. Asian People’s Theatre Festival Society was established in 1994 and has been organising international artistic exchanges with artists all over Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, North America and South America.
