【Behind the scenes: Preliminary Selection 遴選過程直擊】
In late June, Jury Co-chairs Yip Wing-sie and Christoph Po**en, as well as Concertmaster of Hong Kong Sinfonietta James Cuddeford, sat down to carefully go through all 215 applications for the 3rd Hong Kong International Conducting Competition, before shortlisting 16 Candidates to join the Competition in Hong Kong next January. 第三屆香港國際指揮大賽的遴選階段於六月底大功告成，評審聯合主席葉詠詩和柏鵬 (Christoph Po**en)，以及香港小交響樂團樂團首席格德霍特 (James Cuddeford) 一同審閱共215份報名資料，從中選出16位入圍初賽的參賽者。

【Announcing the Candidates! 初賽入圍名單公佈】

We are delighted to announce the 16 Candidates who have been shortlisted to join the 3rd Hong Kong International Conducting Competition in January 2027! This comes after an extremely competitive Preliminary Selection process where the Jury reviewed 215 applications from 38 countries/regions around the world.

由香港小交響樂團主辦，第三屆香港國際指揮大賽共收到215位來自38個國家或地區的指揮報名參賽，反應非常踴躍！經過多位評審一番遴選後，我們現宣佈初賽的入圍名單，16位入圍的年青指揮將於明年一月來港進行三輪淘汰賽，角逐冠、亞、季軍，樂團大獎及兩項觀眾大獎。

A maximum of three Finalists will take centre stage on 31 Jan 2027 to showcase the best of their conducting and compete for the top prizes. They will perform one of three selected iconic works by Bartók, Richard Strauss and Stravinsky of their own choosing, as well as Beethoven’s “Fidelio” Overture and a special commission by Hong Kong composer Daniel Lo Ting-cheung, titled “Endless Rhythm”. The Finalists will also make a short presentation to the audience.

最後晉身決賽的最多3位指揮將在2027年1月31日爭奪冠軍，除了考驗指揮經典樂曲的功力外，亦考驗他們處理當代作品的能力──指定曲目包括由香港小交響樂團委約，香港作曲家盧定彰的最新作品《韻若無盡》，貝多芬的《費黛里奧》序曲，以及自行選擇由巴托克的舞蹈組曲、李察 ‧ 史特勞斯的《死與變容》、史達拉汶斯基的《火鳥》組曲（1919）中指揮其中一首，並需要就指定題目向觀眾作介紹！

Spread over two days, the Semi-Final round of the Competition will begin on 28 Jan 2027, where a maximum of eight Semi-Finalists will conduct a symphony by Brahms, Mendelssohn or Schumann, played by Hong Kong Sinfonietta. Then on 29 Jan, they will be joined by award-winning Hong Kong pianist Rachel Cheung for the 3rd movement of Schumann’s Piano Concerto.

準決賽將分兩日進行，最多八位入圍指揮將於首輪（2027年1月28日）帶領香港小交響樂團演繹布拉姆斯、孟德爾遜、舒曼三首交響曲的其中一首，並於次輪（1月29日）指揮樂團及香港鋼琴家張緯晴演奏舒曼鋼琴協奏曲之第三樂章。賽程緊密，對參賽者的理解及演繹能力都是挑戰，當日大會亦會公布最後入圍決賽的三位參賽者！

The first of the three rounds of competition will take place on 27 Jan 2027 – a maximum of 16 Candidates will be selected to conduct Hong Kong Sinfonietta in Stravinsky’s Concerto in E-flat, “Dumbarton Oaks”, as well as an overture by Mozart or Rossini determined by draw.

今屆指揮比賽將設三回合，最多16位入圍指揮將於初賽（2027年1月27日）中帶領香港小交響樂團演奏史達拉汶斯基的降E大調協奏曲，「敦巴頓橡樹園」，以及經由抽籤決定演奏莫扎特或羅西尼的序曲！

In January 2027, young conductors from around the world will once again converge on Hong Kong for the third Hong Kong International Conducting Competition. Since its first edition in 2018, the competition has established itself as one of Asia’s most significant occasions for up-and-coming conductors, attracting applicants from dozens of countries and producing laureates who have gone on to build international careers.

This edition will be the first to take place since Christoph Po**en assumed the music directorship of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta in 2023. But anyone expecting a dramatic change of direction may be surprised.

“To be honest, I don’t think there are many changes,” Po**en says with characteristic directness. “The last two competitions have always been run together under a sort of joint directorship, artistic leadership between Wing-sie Yip and myself, and we’re doing the same now. The structure is exactly the same as before.”

Now in its third edition and on the way to WFIMC Membership, the Hong Kong International Conducting Competition, organised by Hong Kong Sinfonietta – one of Hong Kong’s flagship orchestras – uses rigorous short-format rounds, methodical scoring, and broad repertoire to reveal musical personality and create real career opportunities for promising young maestros.
