Hong Kong Pride 2025
Outdoor “Rainbow Festival” is Cancelled,
Indoor “Rainbow Market” will Proceed as Planned Today on 23 Nov
The Organising Committee of Hong Kong Pride 2025 has received numerous voices from our community and understands the hopes to organize outdoor events. This year, we have worked to organise an additional outdoor programme—the “Rainbow Festival”—to fly the rainbow flag, symbolising diversity and equality, under the sun. It is with deep regret that we announce the official cancellation of the outdoor Rainbow Festival. Today’s indoor “Rainbow Market” at The Wave, Kwun Tong will continue as scheduled, and we warmly invite everyone to join us.
Like all participants, the Organising Committee hopes for Hong Kong Pride to return to outdoor public spaces. With this goal, we reached out proactively to various government departments. After constructive communication with the Police Force, the outdoor Rainbow Festival was confirmed to be safe. We have successfully rented Venue 1 at the Kwun Tong Waterfront Event Space operated by Aquabeat under Energizing Kowloon East, signed the contract, made full payment, and completed all required procedures before publicly announcing the new outdoor event.
Unfortunately, just one day after our announcement, we have received a notice from Aquabeat stating that the venue could not be made available due to government construction works, and the venue fee was immediately refunded. The Buildings Department later clarified that no such works were scheduled for that day. Aquabeat subsequently confirmed that the situation arose from a communication misunderstanding and would willingly collaborate with us on hosting Hong Kong Pride events.
After regrouping, we attempted to reapply for the venue in hopes of postponing the event. However, despite several weeks of waiting, we have regrettably not received any response from Aquabeat. As event preparation requires considerable time, the Organising Committee must, with regret, announce the cancellation.
We thank Aquabeat for their efforts in supporting equality for sexual and gender minorities in the early phases of our preparation, and we appreciate the active coordination of various government departments, who affirmed the safety of our event. We are deeply saddened and sincerely apologize about the impact that Aquabeat brought to the Buildings Department due to their communication misunderstanding. We also apologise to all community members who looked forward to joining the outdoor Rainbow Festival.
Looking ahead, the Organising Committee will continue to strive to bring Hong Kong Pride back to the outdoors, allowing the rainbow flag to fly under the sun, and to create a safe event where the community can speak for love and stand for equality. We will persevere in the coming year.
We are grateful that today’s indoor Rainbow Market at The Wave, Kwun Tong will proceed as planned. We look forward to meeting everyone and standing together for equality.
