*Barcelona continue to monitor N’Golo Kante situation*

With Sergio Busquets expected to leave Barcelona when his contract expires at the end of the season, attention will turn to who his replacement at the Blaugrana will be.

Numerous targets have been linked, including Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi and Ilkay Gundogan of Manchester City. However, both of those have been ruled out for differing reasons.

One player that has remained a key target throughout has been Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante. The Frenchman, who missed the World Cup in Qatar through injury, has struggled for game time at Stamford Bridge as a result of a lack of fitness.

With his contract expiring at the end of the season, Barcelona could sign Kante on a pre-contract agreement next month, before joining the Blaugrana in the summer. According to Relevo journalist Albert Roge, Barca are keeping a close eye on Kante’s situation at Chelsea, ahead of potentially making a move for the midfielder next month.

Kante is not expected to make a decision of his future until next month, when he is rumoured to return from the injury that prevented his involvement in Qatar.

Barcelona striker, Robert Lewandowski has become the latest recipient of the Golden Foot award at a star-studded ceremony in Monaco on Wednesday.

Lewandowski’s final season with Bayern Munich saw him finish the season with 35 goals.

The 34-year-old also picked up his second consecutive European Golden Shoe a few months ago.

The Polish captain has enjoyed a strong start to life in Barcelona, scoring 13 league goals in 14 appearances in La Liga.

Speaking after receiving the award, Lewandowski expressed happiness, adding that it was a huge honour for him.

He said, “I am very happy, I am very proud, and for me, it’s a huge honour to win this golden foot award, because I know that everything I do and what I did.

“I know how hard I have to work for this, and now I can be proud of myself and also the words that I want, so that has been a lot for me.”

The future of Memphis Depay is unclear, with the Dutchman’s contract expiring at the end of the season.

It looks unlikely that he will renew his stay at the Camp Nou, which leaves Barcelona with a choice: cash in during the winter transfer window or keep him to the end of the season and risk losing him for nothing.

With their financial troubles well known, any opportunity of income may be explored by the Blaugrana, which may mean that Depay leaves next month. Many clubs are interested in him, and Barcelona have reportedly begun receiving bids.

According to MD, Premier League side Newcastle United have submitted a bid for Depay. The fee reported is in the region of €20m, which is a very attractive offer for a player who could leave for nothing in six months, especially considering the forward joined the club from Lyon for nothing.

However, MD state that Depay wants to remain at Barca until the end of the season before making a decision on his future, which would rule out any sale in January.

President Joan Laporta to speak with Lionel Messi in coming days

Lionel Messi may be basking in the glory of his World Cup triumph, but his honeymoon period will not last long. With Messi free to negotiate with anyone in the next 11 days, clubs will be racing in order to get their offers in.

One of them is Barcelona. President Joan Laporta has consistently stated that he is keen to see Messi back in Barcelona, having been the one to see him leave. Despite the odds lying heavily in Paris Saint-Germain’s favour, Laporta will not give up on his hopes.

As he enjoys the Barcelona club Christmas dinner, Sport say that he will speak to Messi and his entourage in the coming days. The intention is to clear the air and repair relations after his exit two summers ago, before ultimately clearing the way to talks. Having received a hero’s welcome back in his hometown of Rosario, Messi is currently relaxing after the World Cup.

It seems a slim chance either way. The Blaugrana will be unable to compete in terms of finances. Laporta will be forced to pull on Messi’s heartstrings and sell him a romantic last dance with Barcelona.

Beyond Messi’s decision, they must work out how to bring in a large salary next summer with their salary limit looking as if it may be highly restrictive. Apparently they are working out another economic lever in order to make the deal work. It is worth remembering that the Barcelona board have permission to sell 49.9% of Barcelona Licensing and Merchandising, which they did not use last summer. Perhaps using it for Messi was the plan all along.
