And the last matriarch for the day is Agnes Oforiwa Tago-Quarcoopome

Just like Dedei Ashikishan, Agnes Oforiwa Tago-Quarcoopome was a market woman. She together with the Makola Women Association called for support for Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Aunty Oforiwa as she was popularly called supported Dr Nkrumah in every way possible and used her connections in society to raise funds for the activities of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP).

And now we move on to Hannah Cudjoe!

She was a political activist with the ability to gather effectively people for rallies, demonstrations among others. This convening ability got her the nickname “Convention Hannah”

When the Big Six were arrested, many gave up but Hannah did not. She gathered Ghanaians from all works of life to petition the colonial masters for their release.

Our third matriarch is Mabel Dove Danquah. She was an active journalist in the pre-independence era who made sure her opinions were carried through her published work. Her column in the Times of West Africa often called on Ghanaians to keep fighting for independence and for women especially to play an active role in the fight against colonialism.

In 1954, she became the first female member of Ghana’s legislative assembly which also made her the first woman to be elected into the African Legislative Assembly.

We applaud her activism through the ink and in the chamber and celebrate her remarkable contribution to Ghana.

Next up is Rebecca Naa Dedei Aryeetey who was popularly referred to as Dedei Ashikishan. She was a business woman, a political activist, and a feminist. She owned a huge flour retail business in Accra hence the name Dedei Ashikishan meaning Dedei flour.

She was the leader of the Market Mother Association. She provided funds and campaigned for Dr Nkrumah to win the Accra Central seat. She was said to be very close to Dr Nkrumah. She died in 1960. Her face is immortalised on Ghana’s 50 Pesewas coin and on a postage stamp.

Usually, when conversations about the independence struggle begins, discourse tends to eliminates the role of women in the struggle.

Not anymore!

Today, Akensie is going to highlight the contributions of Ghanaian women in the Ghanaian independence struggle by highlighting five matriarchs throughout the day!

And so we start with Mary Ayeley Laryea aka Akua Shorshorshor – a founding member and treasurer of the CPP, president of the Market Women’s Association and Womens leader of the Organisers Council during the Acheampong regime.

She also shed her blood and sweat towards the attainment of independence and today we celebrate her contribution to the nationalist struggle!

We pray her work is not in vain and that we realise fully the Ghana Project.

On April 18, 1956, Sir Kobina Arku Korsah became the first African Chief Justice of the then Gold Coast.

Did you know however that Sir Korsah failed three of the courses he took in the second semester of his second year?

According to Kweku Darko Ankrah, he also graduated with a third class LLB from the University of London.

Despite all this, he made a mark in his country!

His story is inspiring and it is the hope of Akensie that it inspires you to go forth and give out your best!
