Everyone has heard of antioxidants right but do you know what they are, why you need them & what they do?
Antioxidants are the essential part of the antioxidant defence system, this is a complex network with mutual interactions and synergetic effects among various compounds (sounds techy right!)
They work by donating one of their own electrons to a free radical molecule, free radicals are molecules that become unstable after losing an electron, to regain stability they attack other molecules to try and capture their electron and the attacked molecule then loses their electron becoming a free radical itself in turn pulling a electron off a neighbouring molecule thus starting a chain reaction!
With or without electrons antioxidants remain stable so they can't become free radicals themselves, antioxidants such as vitamins C & E interact with the oxidation cascade and contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
The levels of antioxidants can be measured with a BioPhotonic scanner which measures your carotenoids levels in your skin and gives you a score (Skin Carotenoid Score or SCS for short) scores can range from 10,000 (bad) to 100,000 (great) as a regular vitamin & mineral supplement users you would think my score would be high right, wrong! I only measured 28,000 so it's time to rethink my supplements & start using a better range to increase my score.
Let me know if you are a regular vitamin & mineral user, what you take & why? Plus do you feel run down & get regular colds?
Many thanks for you time π
