We had a wonderful time celebrating International Dawn Chorus Day last weekend, with the hugely talented Kris Worsley presenting a birdsong-inspired programme of music and readings of poetry and literature, combined with some of his award-winning wildlife photography.

He was rehearsing one of his own compositions (‘The Song of the Winter Robin’) here before the cruise, and one of the residents was particularly taken by his duet with a robin!

Graham is back!

Did you see Graham Caskie on TV when The Piano Boat featured in Narrow Escapes?

He's back on the boat this weekend, this time with clarinettist Poppy Beddoe, in a Piano Boat first!

The story behind the connection with Graham is a long one and goes back over a decade. We met through Masa, as they were colleagues and very good friends, and Graham was the person I asked to perform in the first cruise when The Piano Boat re-opened in October 2024.

You might have also heard him more recently when he was interviewed for our feature programme in BBC Radio 4's 'Illuminated'.

He's been an enthusiastic supporter of The Piano Boat ever since hearing of the idea and first performed on our beautiful Steinway during the launch weekend in August 2021.

There's a personal connection to each musician who performs on The Piano Boat, and a story behind each one. It's part of what makes the whole experience the way it is, and keeps the people and stories at the heart of what we do.

The next performer on board will be the outstanding pianist, Juanjo Blazquez. He has played here a few times now over the last year, and we first met in November 2023 when he was asked to perform Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto in Masa's place, at relatively short notice. This, he did brilliantly, and the following year we organised his first performance on The Piano Boat in early 2025.

The cruises couldn’t run without the steadfast support of the crew! In almost every single event since October 2024, we’ve had the support of Kieran (boat skipper), Chris (lock-opener) and Angela (champagne-pourer). That’s a very diminutive list of the things they do to keep The Piano Boat cruising, and you’ll see them wearing many hats! I’ve never tried writing job descriptions for their roles but I have no doubt that the multi-skilled nature of the requirements would be a striking testament to them all.

Huge thanks as well to Kris Worsley for the wonderful photos.

A joyous celebration of nature and the art that expresses what it is to be alive and human, Kris Worsley brings together a vibrant programme of music, photography and poetry in a special weekend to mark Dawn Chorus Day 2026.

"A wonderful day on The Piano Boat with a nature themed day led by the incredibly talented Kris Worsley, whose dual artistry as a pianist and photographer created a truly immersive experience.

The entire experience was stimulating and thought-provoking, yet deeply relaxing – a rare and wonderful combination. Rhiana, you delivered exactly what you promised: a day away from reality, wrapped in the most wonderful stimulation of the senses – music, delicious food, the peaceful beauty of nature, and the warmth of genuine, thoughtful company.

I left the boat feeling deeply refreshed and inspired. I truly cannot recommend this experience more highly, and I already look forward to returning."
